Improving bottom-end performance

I've got a 1998 406 ST 2.0 litre automatic which has now done 120,000 kms.

I feel that the bottom-end performance is a little sluggish at the moment.

What would be the most effective tweaks or modifications to carry-out to boost the acceleration, without spending a fortune?

I'm not really too bothered about top speed as once the car gets over about 60 kph it goes like a dream.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

It sounds like you would benefit from improved 'breathing'.

A replacement panel filter like K&N and maybe a de-cat pipe or Cat-back exhaust system.

You would have to be careful with the exhaust as it might make a comedy farting sound which could make you look silly :|

From memory I think 'Scorpion' exhaust systems are one of the quietest but others may think different, don't get a powerflow exhaust on a non-turbo car as it will be too loud.

An induction kit could work well as long as you can isolate it as much as you can from the heat in the engine bay (that's why I said replacement element).

Can you get high Octane unleaded in Israel because this can help a lot with low end power.

You may also benefit from some high performance HT leads like Magnacore and also Spark plugs like NGK iridiums for example (just to get the best ignition you can).

I would not bother with these Power Boost Valves as they will just make the car run rich.

Thanks for the information.

We have unleaded 95 octane petrol over here, which is what I use in the car.

I'll look into replacing the exhaust system though.

Hi,

it seems we have the same type of pug, and i got the same problem as yours too. for first step you could try to loose your filter box and use the air filter replacement (cones) but it will sound louder and it ain't pretty. it will for sure helps your car breathes better.

second you could try to piggyback your car, port and polish your block, and stick some new muffler.

becareful since we have some reports here that when changing muffler, the sensors detects 'bad' emission because the catalyst is removed. but i also found some pug 406 change their muffler without problem.

good luck and i hope it helps.
