407 1.6 hdi

hi looking in to buying a 407 1.6 hdi what are these engines like and are they mated up to a six speed box

They are mated to a 6 speed box, but the general consensus of opinion is that the 1.6 HDi is best avoided due to them having fairly regular turbo issues. Depending on your budget, it may be a better bet to get a 2.0 HDi, but also bear in mind that most 407 HDis are fitted with a particulate filter & if a lot of your driving involves short local trips, this may also cause you problems. The filter can be removed & the ECU reprogrammed to not have it, but you do need to be aware that you have the thing before you buy.

As far as I know, the only 407 HDis that don't have this are the X-line models.

thanks for the advice might stick to a 406 but will go for a late 53 plate might get a bit more kit

Looking at your location, there was a stunning looking 2.2 HDi SE estate for sale (£3000) not far from you a few weeks ago. Same issues with the particle filter, but there are quite a few people on here that have removed it from one of those.

so i would be better removing the dpf then getting the ecu remapped to remove the dpf from the ecu
it is a pity quite fancied a 407 like how they look

Actually better getting both done very close together, but best to do the remap first to make sure the car accepts it. Our resident expert can remove the FAP functions from any standard file, but the advantage of the 2.2 in the 406 is that more people have done it & there is a 180bhp deFAPped file that can be used on most.

Having driven one myself, I can well reccommend it.

I thought the 407 1.6HDi had only 5-speed? http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Det ... eriv=27605

You get more power and torque out of the 2.0 HDi 90 than you do the 1.6 HDi 110, up to about 2500rpm.
Consequently, you have to rev the 1.6 to get anything out of it, and this seems to translate into poor reliability.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

cant really comment on the 1.6 as mine is a 2.0 but as has been mentioned turbo's have been known to fail on the 1.6
Also i think the 1.6 is only a 5 speed as well
and the x-line and the zenith dont have dpf. but to be fair there not causing many problems and as most newer diesels have the dpf were just gonna have to get used to them
