Guys a few of you have asked me about repair kits for your unit's....
TurboSpares on eBay has got some new kits in stock...... kits start from about £54.99 and go upto £70ish for genuine Garrett kits or £99 for a stage 1 360 degree thrust bearing kit ( personally I recommend this one ).
Take a look :
Garrett T2 / T25 / T28 Repair Kit - Std 270 Degree Thrust bearing Kit
Stage 1 Repair Kit - 360 degree thrust bearing kit

Re: Turbo Repair Kits...
I know a little about turbos but what are the majour benifits of these 360 deg thrust bearings, I hear them being spouted about everywhere like its the holy grail but in what way will this increase the performance of my turbo.Niz406 wrote:Guys a few of you have asked me about repair kits for your unit's....

Off my head I'm guessing the main bearing rather than just floating on an oil film is replaced with said thrust bearing, thus meaning less friction which inturn means faster spool time and ability to spin quicker meaning more boost and less heat. but i could be completly wrong,
just wondering if its worth "hybriding" my t25 or just getting gt28r for the 16v head.
looking at a recon gt28r at the moment

I was trying to look for my previous post on this, but have been unable to find it... so from the top of my head here goes..
The Major benefits of the 360 degree bearing kits are:
You would be better off with the GT28R, reasons being...
The GT28R significantly reduces boost pressure temps, this is done through the use of a larger compressor wheel and larger diameter scroll. The GT28R uses a T3 compressor wheel and so allows for the same pressures as the stock T25 at lower temps, because the turbo is more efficient. The charge is under less pressure due to this increase in scroll size, as you know.. the more compact ( pressurised ) charge the greater the heat and chances of detonation, this is where the GT28R is a better choice.
The Major benefits of the 360 degree bearing kits are:
- Greater load bearing efficency ( complete not partial as with 270 degree bearing and thrust plate )
- Smoother - Quicker spooling response - as a result of above
- Removes the dry spot from the shaft on start up by providing 360 degrees of lubrication
- Resolves coked bearings at higher temps - unless turbo is run dry or blockage in feed pipes
You would be better off with the GT28R, reasons being...
- Greater flow rate
- Colder denser charge @ same boost levels
- Ballbearing based turbo
- Ideal choice for 406 upgrade
