Is my car really a scrapper?

Right, I am a very disgruntled owner, my car just had a service, (406 W reg) I have been informed that the lumpiness in the engine for the 1st 10 mins of driving, till it warms up, is down to a 'known fault' with piston number 1. Hey no problem, can u fix it then? No, its a 4 figure sum, get rid of the car!!!! Someone out there tell me this is not the case, I have searched forums up and down the globe and can find no evidence of such a 'known problem'

im guessing being a w plate that means its using an EW engine, aluminium block no liners either basically they are very very good engines. i dont know a huge amount about them but i do know replacing one will not cost you a four figure sum. you coudl obtain a known good one for £500 and then throw a mechanic a days labour and jobs a goodun.
running lumpy when cold to me could be numerous things but a problem with cylinder 1? how would that be in intermittent fault that "fixes" iteself when warm id love your "mechanic" to explain this to me.
its probably something very simple, could even just be the wrong grade of oil in there causing, i guess these use a stepper motor? not an idle solenoid, as if it is a stepper it would be all the time not just when warm, an idle solenoid is a different story.
as for you saying about this known problem, take your car elsewhere because i have been working on pugs and a pug fanboy for the last 7 years doing various engine conversions etc etc, and i have never ever heard of any problem with cylinder 1.
if you could explain the lumpiness a little more we might be able to diagnose, is it noisier while runnign liek this, if so what type of noise and does it stop once engine is warm?
does it stall when cold?
give us any info you can and we can try to help you out.

Firstly, thanx 4 ure time in this mater. I should have told u all the details b4 expecting anyone to offer any sort of diagosis, so here goes. Pug 406 2litre 16v, top spec, lovely motor, except in the last few weeks when starting up, for 1st 10 mins, runs a little lumpy, not all four seem to be doing the required job, if u know what I mean? After 10 mins, sweet as a nut! Mechanic said that its the piston in the number 1 cylinder, its a known fault and cannot be rectified without spending a 4 figure sum. He was not too specific as to the 'actual' problem, be it the ring/s? or the piston itself? That is y I gave vague description of problem, I wanted this 'known' fault, to raise its ugly head without being to specific, if u know what I mean? Many thanx once more for your time in this matter
