Just bought myself a 2.0 hdi 110 on a W reg and am very pleased so far.
I've a question I'm hoping the experts can answer please.
When selecting reverse if I don't hold it in gear it will jump out. Also 2nd and 4th gear seems to be a long way back on the stick. If I put it in these gear with the handbrake on the top of the gear lever touches the handbrake.(hope that makes sense).
Done a lot of searching and I think it could be the cables, but before I get stung by the dealer, is there anyway I can check this so I don't waste my hard earned cash?
Is it worth while sourcing some cables from a scrapper to save money?

Hold on, W reg is... 2000 so I think that'll still be an ML5T and it is possible to change just the cables (breakers, not dealers - they'll set you back about 150 sovs there). It sounds to me like there's something come adrift - perhaps worth having the air filter off and getting someone to push the stick fore and aft while you watch what happens. It's not something I've heard of before on one of these anyway.

On the gearbox side it's awkward but not a huge problem to detach the cables - just pop 'em off the gearbox then remove the clips holding them to the bracket:

The gearstick side I have no idea, but I have a suspicion you'll need to yank an exhaust section and remove the heat shield to get at it

I've found a technical doc entitled "Removing - refitting Gear lever with cables" and it looks like you can just unclip the cables from the box, remove the centre console & take the whole lot out that way. However, after bleating on about how you have to use the special tools to split the ball joints or you'll bend them, and going on and on about how to remove the centre console,it then says:

Remove the gear lever assembly.

What the f..? No mention of how to get it off the floor or how the cables are routed

Just an update on this. Had car into local Peugeot specialist and outer cable has come adrift underneath somewhere near gear lever. He's fastened it back and it's as good has new.
