Regeneration of DPF filter

Im having issues with my dpf light and low power output when light is lit. Put it in local garage to have regen done and the light comes on when it feels like it. Im not willing to keep throwing money at it. been looking in places on the net and they suggest beating it out and getting the ecu info changed to dsable this. dont know where to start. any info would be good. regards mart
