Seems like there are only a few HPi Petrol motors on the forum? or even the UK

It was a rare engine used in the D9 - but surely there must be more of us out there

Quick, Quiet and Economical, Low Emissions - 36-38mpg and with Petrol at about 25-30p a Gallon less than the Oilers
So about 40mpg if you compare the fuel costs?

+ some it's not so popular problems

never knew they was that good,

thats almost as good as a Diesel,

what size engine are these Hpi s

They're all 2.0 & mostly found in post 2001 Execs & GTXs, but also in the C5. Has to be said though, they are hideously complicated from what I've been told & can also sound a bit like a diesel on start up.

Did they just stop using the engine when they finished with the 406 or did they take what they learned & apply it to the engines that were used in the 407s? On the surface it looks like they ditched it in favour of using the 2.2 found in the coupe & SRi.

I got the idea that the 2.2 was the replacement for the 2.0 turbo and they ditched the HPi in favour of not having to pay warranties out on such a troublesome engine

Correct- better power curve and fuel consumption and engine note and throttle response and peak horsepower output however - it's an EW Enjin - Unreliable

First time I've heard that one. Admittedly it isn't one of the most common engines in the PSA group, but I've not heard too many horror stories or seen too many 2.2 spares or repairs for sale with engine faults.

Family friend's a mechanic and he advises heavily against the EW, in particular the V6- I trust his word but then I suppose your opinions are mainly going to be what one's heard and what one's seen. I've not known the acquaintance of anybody that drives one to be fair but I have heard bad things.

V6s are ESJ - but know what he means with them. Even if you get one that runs ok, the cambelt change can cost nearly a grand from what I've heard although I'm not too sure why.

Definitely one for people that are handy with the spanners & not too worried about fuel consumption.

Don't put me off the damned things of the Tubby that you've been defending is gonna get it!!!

Hi Lozz - not a joke mate 100% serious around town I get 34mog on a recent runt to Scotland (1,200) 39.6mpg.
I have checked the MFD and it is accurate. Dai Ress has an Estate with teh same engine and he averages 33mpg.
Even with a heavy right foot I get 30mpg, I am staggered at how economical it is as I had a 1.8 16v D8 a few years ago and it would do more than 27mpg?

Apparently the same lump was used in teh 207/308 GTi mated to teh 6 speed box, and as your say the C5?

Oddly enough I have had very little trouble with mine?
Although I ma having issues with 'Anti Pollution Fault' and an intermittent misfire' but it has never let me down?

thats not bad Mpg that considering the 406 is a big heavy car!
the citreon picasso ive got only does 38 at best and thats a lighter body, with a very strained 1.6 engine,

so how are these hpis reaching good mpg?

They're direct injection, same principal as an Hdi I guess.
My volvo's engine is a similar lump, I average about 36mpg which is in a different league to the tubby!

I'm no techy guys, but did a bit of research before I bought it (Only paid £950! One owner full Pug History and 94k milage last April so rare) I have only spent about £100 on in in 12 months, bit more now though

Apprently, High Pressure Fuel Pump, Direct Injection, lean Burn, they were one of the lowest emission 2.0 motors when they came out, but as many have said PSA had issues with Reliability and Parts Costs, plus with Diesel engines getting better all the time in 02 there probably wasn't a need to continue with it?
Apprently 67% if all Pugs were sold as Diesel in 2002, I suspect even more, sure there must have been a lot of very nice 406's scrapped back then just becasue of the engines probs?
