My 406 has been running like a bag of turd every time I go through puddles. It doesnt pull at all, revs to 2500 in neutral before piling out the black smoke.
Ive had to crawl to work this morning
Any ideas as to fix/ help this problem. What would water be getting into that could cause a diesel to do this?
Im right pissed by this. Any more and the Sthil saw is getting fired up for surgery.

Zee electreeks, should go away after it dries out.

I always steer WELL clear of puddles in my Puggy for this very reason.

Conversely though, a Diesel motor should be fairly happy getting soaked (if you know what I mean).

If you can, leave it ticking over for ages get it hot, then leave the bonnet up to let the water dry out as long as it doesn't rain!

Have a peak around the ECU carrier?

Look in your air box (filter might be soaked).

Have you got compressed air lines at work? blow around all the electrical bits with the air line.

Its now coming up with "Antipollution fault"
It did the same the other day and it cleared after leaving it running, but the antipollution fault wasnt there then.
I have removed the air filter and its soaking wet.
I tried again at tea time, and its the same.
I will run it over lunchtime and see how it goes.

I reckon it's your airfilter causing the problem, as soon as it gets wet it is blocked, this will have an effect on the emissions.

Dry the filter out or pop to the motor factors for a new one.

Yours has got a sensor for emissions, this will be sooted up because of the blocked filter and needs a good hot run to burn it off clean again.

Water mist is getting drawn up the low air intake and collecting in the filter (I can see a miniman special cheap modification coming).

I was already thinking of making a "special" filter box intake!!
Maybe a snorkel up to the roof?
All roads up here are blocked today, theres no traffic coming up from Inverness at all, and theres only one road leading to here.
Ive got a pair of chest waders in the boot if needs must
The filter is drying on my heater in the office next to me.

I'm sure it will be fine once you put the dry filter back in, just watch those puddles!!!

Tempararily you might be able to pull off the air hose connection to the bottom of the air box, bit of a pig to see though.

As long as the filter is in place it will just pull it's air from the engine bay instead.
