2.2hdi tuning
Looking at moving up in the world and moving back to diesels. Was wondering what potential the 2.2hdi 406's had? What reliable power can you get and any common faults i need to know before i part with my cash.
Many thanks

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
They start off with 136 HP, but with the removal of the diesel particulate filter (DPF, also known as the FAP), and the installation of an ECU remap, you will get 180 HP out of it, plus an extra wad of torque for good measure.
Add a stainless steel performance exhaust system and you will get a bit more too.

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
Sounds promising. I'v tuned diesels before (remapped, decat, hybrid turbo) but being a rover the result was only 153bhp. Would love to see the 200bhp mark tho

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
200BHP should be possible with a bigger turbo but how that would affect clutch, flywheel, gearbox etc I wouldn't like to say. I know they're a bit beefier as standard than the 2 litre but 200 bhp would be a big old jump from standard.
Having said that if you do it I'd love a drive in it

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
It looks like 180 bhp and be achieved without affecting long term reliability, (currently mine has done 16 months / 27k since remap). A few of cars on the coupe forum were certainly 'done' earlier, but I don't know on mileage since.
The two examples I heard of trying for more power than this have ended in turbo failures, but it's a sample of 2, so could be misleading.
Only issue of note I have is a vibration when pulling hard from low rpm in a high gear, (but OK with standard map). Current suspect is a 'soft' engine mount.

Did you manage to eliminate the DMF from the investigation then?dogslife wrote: Only issue of note I have is a vibration when pulling hard from low rpm in a high gear, (but OK with standard map). Current suspect is a 'soft' engine mount.

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
Didn't CJ report something similar when he remapped his 2.0?

How did you manage to get 296bhp out of a 110. Was that a typo error? I thought the most you could get with a re-map was somewhere around 150-160bhp? Did having that much power wreck the engine?

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
Most i've seen out of a 110 was 170bhp, and out of the 2.2 was 245bhp ( the 2.2 had a BMW 530D turbo and fuel pump, and hybrid injectors )(the 110 had a fuel pump of a Merc)

I hadn't realised he'd chopped it in for the Volvo 'cos it was too quick.

(regardless of how common that reasoning is among those migrating to the Swedish marque).
Shrewd of him to realise the 'welton panel' wouldn't have been tested beyond warp factor 3 too.

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
Their not dual mass flywheels are they? Also do they have swirl ports as well? Just thinking of other faults i have came across in other diesel engines.

They have DMF's but I've not heard of anyone having to repace one on a 2.2 yet.mattMPH wrote:Their not dual mass flywheels are they? Also do they have swirl ports as well? Just thinking of other faults i have came across in other diesel engines.
They also have swirl ports, but unlike certain flawed designs from southern Germany, the flaps don't fall off and if they did, they're too big to get ingested by the engine.

Re: 2.2hdi tuning
Maybe the German place thought it would be impossible for any of their components to 'fail' at some point, being so well made and thatdogslife wrote:unlike certain flawed designs from southern Germany, the flaps don't fall off and if they did, they're too big to get ingested by the engine.

Maybe. But perhaps it was because they KNEW it would break (like the COMM2000s, the wiring, the droplinks etc) but didn't want to be bothered with having to do an engine rebuild when it did...
