2.2 petrol engine mounts questions UPDATE

It seems one or more of my engine mounts need replacing.

Questions are...

What's the bodge for the lower mount where you need to remove the dredded drive shaft?

My top mount was replaced by previous owner so that one is fine so is there a third mount? If so, what's the part number and is it the same as other d9 models? Is it easier to change than the pig lower one?

Hi

I have a 2.0 hdi i bodged the lower engine mount and it lasted for about 6months before i finally took the plunge and replaced it. Basically i jacked up the car on the drivers side then put it on an axle stand. Then i found some old exhaust rubbers that i had lying around chopped them up into bits and packed the engine mount out with them use something just to wedge them into place then put use some instant gasket on the whole lot( both sides) and let it set overnight this is not ideal but it would give you a bit of time if you are a bit short of cash i know i was. If you use the search engine on here and type in lower engine mount there are a couple of posts on here where we've discussed this before.

If you decide to replace the lower mount it costs about £10-£15 and it involves taking the driveshaft out and the casing that the lower mount sits in has to be unbolted from the back of the engine and you will need a hydraulic press to push the old bush out then new one in. I managed to do it myself not done it before and i'm not the best mechanic in the world. If you didn't have access to a hydraulic press take the casing and the bush to a local garage and get them to do it should only cost £10 then once thats done put it all back together and save some cash. if you need anymore advice post again.

You dont have too take the whole driveshaft out to replace the lower mount bush,

its a pain to do but you can bash them out with a sharp pointy chizel,
iwatched someone in a garage change one the other day and they just cut right through it with a hack saw, bush fell on the floor, replaced bush and filled gap with Jb weld :shock:
theyve never had problems doing them that way or any comeback,

Jb weld is good tho imust admit, :mrgreen:


also anyone looking for areplacement bush,

Xsara picasso,
Berlingo vans
jumpy vans
pug 406 all share the same bush,
you may find the 406 ones even tho theyre the same slightly more expensive than the above, :?

Well I packed the bottom mount with sikaflex and rubber but the car still jumps out of reverse. What now?

Damn :( I think all you have left is to check there's no play in the cables and that the gear lever is not being stopped going fully into reverse by something (this would probably involve undoing the cables from the gearbox)

What? :shock: You'll have to remove the air filter box to see the gearbox end of the cables, you'll also need assistance - one person to move the gearstick about while the other watches/holds/pokes with a big screwdriver. You want to know that the movement of the gearstick is directly translated to the gearbox without any slop. If that's looking ok you'll need to pop the ends of the cables off the gearbox end and make sure there's nothing stopping the gearstick going completely into reverse (something broken, pound coin wedged in the mech at the bottom of the stick etc.)

This is all I can think of doing, there are procedures on Service Box for the gearbox end of the selectors on the ML5s but they all start with the words "remove gearbox" I'm afraid.

lift up the cover gear stick Gaiter, end
and check nothings come a drift

someone on the forum had trouble with gears the other week and it was one of the cables that had come out of the holder,
worth a look :roll:

if the cable's have come off, surely it wouldnt engage reverse at all would it?

ANOTHER UPDATE/OBSERVATIONS... it only seems to jump out when the engine is real warm.

have you checked the level of the gear oil ?
might not be low but worth a check,

Checked the oil level and it only had 1.5 litres in. Topped it up and it's still the same!

Had a helper select gears and as each was engaged I watched the fork on top of the gear box- there seems to be a little play there. But as the lever moves, so does the fork. And interesting there are only 2 cables and not 3 as I thought.
