The FAP is a diesel particulate filter that (in the 406 range) is fitted only to cars with the 2.2 litre 16valve HDi diesel engine. Its job is to reduce carbon emissions from what is already a pretty green engine. It works by capturing these particles in the filter. Periodically, the car automatically cleans ("regenerates") the FAP by use of a small quantity of cerene solution. This additive cleanses the pollutants from the FAP and disperses them through the normal exhaust process.

The problems with the FAP are as follows:

1) Because it is an extra layer of filtration in the exhaust system, it slows down exhaust flow, strangling the engine's performance

2) The filter element needs to be clean in order for it to work efficiently, so you need to ensure the cerene solution tank does not dry up

3) The cerene solution is expensive and is only supposed to be topped up by the main dealer (this is something to do with programming the ECU on the car with the correct fluid levels)

4) If the FAP is physically damaged due to blockage or normal wear and tear, it is very expensive to replace


The solution to this problem neatly resolves all of the above problems - the car's FAP element is physically removed from the car and the can which contained it is emptied out and replaced, and the ECU is programmed to think it doesn't have a FAP element any more.

The ECU file (the map) most people use for this job also has the side benefit of adjusting the fuel/air mix and the turbo pressures in such a way that the car ends up going from the stock 136 HP to a total of 180 HP. The engine will also deliver more torque throughout the rev range.

Once this is done, you will NEVER need to replace the cerene solution, the car will perform much better, and you'll find that it will still pass the emissions section of the UK MOT.

In order to do it, you need a Galletto 1260 cable (available on eBay), access to the tools necessary to remove the FAP can from the car, access to the tools necessary to smash out the FAP element itself, and a copy of the ECU map file that boosts your car's performance. Some of the HDi owners here will be able to sort you out with a copy of the map file and some more specific instructions - as a petrol-engine owner, I've never done this myself.

cheers fellas already had mate remove dpf from car didnt realize thats what it ment.car is now back in limp mode didnt know we had to reset ecu.ive just ordered pp2000 from net hope this is right tool for job.does anyone know where to get file to reset from.thanks for your help paul

No, you can't use PP2000 to remap the ECU. Buying PP2000 isn't a bad idea though, it's a handy tool to have (though you will need to have a Windows XP laptop in order to use it, as the software isn't compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7).

You need a Galletto 1260 cable and software to perform the remap - this kit should do the job:

The car is entering limp-home mode because it thinks there's still a FAP element there and there isn't one. Flashing the ECU with the appropriate file will clear this problem.

As for where to get the file? Send dogslife a PM and he should be able to help you out.

Incidentally, does anyone who remaps their cars happen to have (or know where to get) a remap file available that would suit (read: boost the performance of) my EW12 J4 2.2 petrol?

Well yeah. But where did the 180 HP map come from that all the 2.2 HDi guys share out? Wondered if there was some kind of repository of these "out there" somewhere...
