Hi all have fitted new plugs and coolant temp sensor to my car but still a pig to start when cold takes about 6 turns my question is if the glow plug light is on does that mean the plugs are getting warm sounds stupid i know but i was told not only when the engine is cranked and not beforehand. Also does that mean the glow plugs should be heated by the relay before its cranked if the light is on

ya the glow plug light only comes on for a few seconds , but depending on the conditions , like temp, they stay on for so many seconds.
try this link

Have u tested them? Mines takes bout 7secs to fire up. How long does yours take?
Is ur starter motor ok. Or is it slow/lazy. Mines is a bit slow. Diesel starters need to be quite quick or it won't really start properly.

Yeah replaced glow plugs 2 weeks ago and a new coolant sensor that sorted out the lumpy idle issue but still takes ages to start then a plume of white smoke it depends how cold it is if its say 8degrees for example it fires up straght away but any lower can take up to 7 or 8 seconds, how would i check the starter it seems ok to me

Your starter will bo ok so long as it turns over at a decent speed.
Mines is slow but takes bout 7secs when it's cold but I'm also checkin my glowplugs when it cones out garage tomorrow for clutchjob. It could be that the fuel is flowing back down the pipes overnight on ur car and the little while that ur cranking it over is feeding it back up into injectors. I think an airleak causes this but I'm maybe wrong. Some1 else might know.

i did notice when i primed the bulb this morning air bubbles though this didnt help with starting i have a siemens system on my 90 so no lift pump unlike my old 110 with a lift pump in the tank

Try turning the ignition on until the plug light goes out then turn it off, turn it back on, wait for the light to go out then try starting it.
This should give the plugs a good chance to work and also fully prime the system.
I've been doing this since the temperature drops and she fires up straight away.

if the light comes on does that mean i should be getting a voltage at the first plug before cranking

I'm having the same problem with mine, similarly with cold starts at temperatures under around 7-8 degrees. Haven't really tried anything yet, and this week it's been too warm!
On the coldest days (around 1-2 degrees so far this winter) I noticed the glowplug light go on for only about half a second, which seems normal according to the Haynes manual - it says 0.5 seconds for preheat and 1 minute for post-heat at 0 degrees, but that may be for Bosch HDIs (it denies any existence of Siemens versions

).

does your also blow out white smoke upon startup, i know its not water from the coolant as thats fine and no loss and also no loss of oil im not entirley sure what sensors are on it that could affect it but was hoping somone may know just so i can check

Yeah I get white smoke too - the amount seems to depend on how long it was cranking for, and once it starts moving it goes away. According to the Haynes manual there is a coolant temp sensor that the glow plugs depend on (not sure if this is the only such sensor). It's all managed by the ECU on "later models", which I guess might mean Siemens versions.

i did replace the coolant temp sensor but seems to have got worse i also have a whistle noise when i gently blip the throttle when warm it seems to be one thing after the other i would say though there are quite a few people with th 90 hdi having similar issues but all resolved different ways

I'm going to do some testing when I get a chance - I have a multimeter but I'm seriously lacking in the tools department so not even sure if I can remove the glow plugs with what I have :/

i spoke to a guy at feather diesel he told me a couple of things first was that on siemens injectors its rare for them to leak back but if they do it may caue air to get in the system causing a starting problem, i do get air in the system in the morning in my car he mentioned fitting a non return valve but christ knows where i would get one.

I gave up trying to do anything myself and took mine to a mechanic. I asked to test the glow plugs when I was getting it serviced a few weeks ago and he said they all seem to be working fine, but the fuel filter was in a pretty bad state so that might have been affecting starting. However cold starting didn't improve at all so I dropped it in again and he took a closer look at things.
It turns out the wrong glow plugs were fitted - 12V plugs instead of the 11V ones it is supposed to have (I take it these are the same for all 2.0 HDIs regardless of fuel system?). It has the correct plugs fitted now, so I'll see how things go from here.
So I had a problem with the wrong sump plug washer leaking oil, and now the wrong glow plugs - I wonder what else was done arseways with this car?
