1.9td Engine rebuild - worth the effort?

Post by gumby6371 »

Just wondering if rebuilding my tired engine or possibly buying a cheap engine and rebuilding that would be worth the cash/effort ?

The logic being a rebuilt engine running on a mix of derv and veg should recoup the cash.

The car is rust free but could do with a new wing and bonnet when I find a good one at the breakers

If I were to go ahead with the engine rebuild I'd probably replace the suspension while I was at it.

In theory £1500 to £2000 would give me a cheap comfortable family saloon which should last the next 5 years+ with just regular servicing and little else.

The engine rebuild is beyond me spanner skills but I might be able to get it done through a firm we use at work at a reasonable price.
Suspension isn't very complex so I'd turn the spanners myself to save some cash.

Any thoughts?

in a short answer "no" !!! but it all depends on what you want
£1500-£2000 would get you a mint D9 exec or SE ..

then again i would sooner have a mint D8 1.9 than any D9 to be honest. i was car buying 2 weeks ago and had £1000 to buy one. looked at quite a few D9s but in the end decided to buy a D8 1.9td on 99 S plate for £500

you could get a mint D8 1.9 that isnt tired for under £1000 and have change over

its all down to preference really. but if you rebuild yours you will never recoupe the money not even in veg oil ...

There are people selling perfectly good cars for bugger-all money. The number of V6 Coupes going for under a grand these days is just shocking - not even talking about early D8 models in battered condition, either.

Here's a quick AutoTrader search I did, which finds all Peugeot 406 cars (petrol or diesel, of any body shape), up to 10 years old (meaning D9s from late 2001 onwards), with up to 80,000 miles on the clock, costing less than £1,000:

There are 4 at the moment, including a very tidy V6 saloon in China Blue (has the full Exec package).

No diesels in that search at the moment, but you can tweak the results to your heart's content.
