power steering cooler

Post by craiggc »

i have finally managed to get the cooler pipe off my recovered/abandoned 406 (see my thread in the electrical section) and it transpires the car has had a small bump at the front - pushing the cooler pipe inwards and upwards onto one of the radiator fans.

This means it then sliced a huge gash in the pipe in the process - now im living in the outback of australia so getting a new/used part is going to be difficult and certainly will take a while, so anyone have any suggestions on any diy repairs i could attempt in the meantime ?

i am on the lookout for some hydraulic pipe and have some clamps so was going to attempt using those ?

Hi Craig, Is the cooler pipe the one that coils around under the radiator and about 10mm diameter?

If so I have one of these that I repaired in my garage at home, I used a piece of high pressure brake servo piping and jubilee clips....it isn't under pressure so any oil/fuel resistant piping will be fine.

I'll try to post a picture for you sometime today.

Here is the photo....

The pipe is more like 12mm internal diameter than 10mm.

Yes, it's a common problem, I've replaced quite a few, the location is definitely poor.

I repaired this for a customer as a temporary repair until his new part arrived...I keep it in case someone else needs one in a hurry.

Pity you aren't a bit closer, you would be welcome to it.

blagged a length of pipe and fitted it xmas day - popped fluid in it yesterday and the car now drives like a hovercraft not a sherman tank.

thanks all for the info !
