I have a 406 2003 2.2 with the Hdi DW12 TED engine. I have the clean diesel filter urgent message appearing on the dash (P1447 code).

Apparently you can get a re-conditioned FAP filter for about half the price or less than the main dealer supplied new unit, however I've been advised these are not as efficient as a new unit and will have to be re-generated sooner. Anybody any experience of getting a re-conditioned filter against a new one? I've been told the car is around the mileage to get a new FAP fitted so don't know whether to get a re-con unit or new one.

Also, I've been told you can run at 4,000 rpm along the motorway for 25 mins and this can help re-generate the filter. Does this have to be at the recommended 55mph or could you do this say in 3rd gear at 40mph?

The cheapest option is to remove the FAP completely. This can be accomplished for around £50 and is a permanent solution - it won't ever block or need the additive topped up. Let me know if you're interested & I'll talk you through it.

OK thanks for that. I checked that out not long ago and someone said this would effect your exhaust emissions (e.g more) I'll get back if I would like to do this; I read somewhere it can effect the ECU and it needs re-programmed? Also another piece of pipe needs fitted in place of where the FAP filter is?

I think that FAP filter must be catching the black smoke 'soot' as I virtually never see any black smoke coming from the exhaust.

For the mean time I've driven about 30 mins today at 3,000 revs range 2nd and 3rd at around the 30-40mph range. Since I've done that the 'clean diesel (FAP) filter' light has gone off and I've cleared the P1447 error code from the ECU with an ELM327 with a Bluetooth interface. Do the high revs re-gen the filter by 'cooking' off the deposits on the FAP due to higher exhaust temps?

Without the FAP the exhaust emissions are as a 2.0 HDi, i.e. very little. It easily passes the MOT without.

Ecu does need to be reprogrammed, but it's a simple job requiring a £25 flash programmer. You don't need another pipe, you just remove the FAP element from it's housing. The system looks identical afterwards, (no de-cat pipes or others signs things have changed), you just get a perfectly clear filter, always. Also stops you wasting fuel regenerating the FAP.

Alternatively you can always renew the FAP, get the additive topped up / counters reset and probably get change from £700, until next time.
