406 hdi wont start

Hi All, hope you can help me!
Alternator drive belt disintergrated, and 1/2 a mile further on the engine died, and will not restart, cranks over but wont fire! Checked everything suggested on various forums and eventually forked out 50 quid for a bloke to come and do a diagnostic test. Came up with 3040 [or could have been 0340], cam/crank not syncronised, so today I have checked the timing, and its only a fraction out of getting both 8mm pins in at the same time. On this forum I have seen similar diagnostic results and its just been the crank sensor, so I dont feel my 50 quid was well spent.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated, cant help thinking the "flailling" belt damaged something, and its non starting is somehow related.
Happy new year to everyone
Phil

Had your timing belt been changed at any point?

Thanks so far!
Timing belt etc was changed back in february when the vibration damper pulley went at 70 on the A14, car did still run on 3 cylinders after smashing several "fingers". Ask myself as it ran then, why doesnt it now when its only a fraction out?
Fuel pump is working fine.
Cheers
Phil

I'd take it back to whoever did the time and get them to retine it put a new belt on n check the tensioners. U still got a month or two guarantee on it for them to do it for free.

Good idea that,
but, they will most probs say the problem was caused by the aux belt,
if iwas running a garage, iwouidnt touch it, obviously if the aux belt as Failed its not been Replaced,
iwouid ~Renew any Aux belts whilst replacing a cam belt, the Extra £15 can save £100s

Thanks for the help so far, still wont go!
Timing was well out, I'd picked up the wrong slot on the flywheel, read a brilliant post on here and that put me right!
Timing is now spot on but it still wont fire, lots of compression [injector seat is leaking a bit on No3, i think it has for a while], fuel pump under seat is whirring away, fuel is getting up to the injectors and Ive reset the BMI. Is the rev counter supposed to read whilst its cranking as mine doesnt, and I cant remember if it should or not.
Any help/ideas would be much appreciated, got to go to work on the bus!
Cheers
Phil

Well folks now I've had a chance I've took the rocker cover off and the problem is totally obvious! All 8 cam fingers are gone [lots of bits floating around]so thats my starting problem.
I have one extra problem in that one valve is missing its collet/top washer, and wonder if anyone has seen this before? Can the snapping of the fingers "dislodge" this, or will it have damaged the head or piston?
Head will have to come off, but I'm wondering if its worth doing!
Cheers
Phil
