you wont mess up the timing just changing the pulley. i watched john take off my bottom pulley off on my 1.9 to change timing belt. the main worry will be undoing the bolt ...

yep as mike says there is a little cog behind it . the aux belt pully can be removed without taking that one off so then timin belt will stay in postition ..

there is also a good way of removing the bolt.. you need confidence to do this. put the ratchet onto the bottom pully bolt and trap it left under the subframe. then turn the engine over once with the key. make sure you dont let it start.
its gotta be a quick one turn over. and the bolt undo's perfect...

ive seen it done. and it does it perfect in a second. or you could be there for hours trying to undo it if it wont untighten ..

if you do it this way make sure the socket is on the bolt proper

best thing really is try to undo it manually. with your hands and elbow grease. if you cant get it off try turning engine way but as mike says make sure socket on properly .

Cheers guys for tips. I dont think id try the engine-start method unless i was gettin the serious hump trying.
My luck is so bad something'd go wrong!
Can pulleys be bought from motor-factors, or u think its an ebay/dealers job.
Saw them on ebay for £39. Prob near £80 from Peugeot

And they probably aren't damped, which is a bad thing. I got an Akron Malo for 90€, it's well made.

ok mate. just be carefull with the bottom pulley. if you think its on its way out get it chaged as soon as possible. you dont want that breaking up and letting the auxbelt fly off. it could be a possible engine knacked job if the auxbelt gets jammed in the timin belt

I wouldn't try this job if I wasn't confident about it, undoing that nut is a pig by all accounts - you'd either need a 12' long scaffold pole with your socket welded to it (joke) or 'shock it' undone in a Jasper-style "you've got one shot at it" kinda thing.
