Anyone replaced their crankshaft pulley? Easy job?

I have a rattle coming from this area but recently just renewed the auto tensioner & belt,so its not that. Mechanic said its my crankshaft pulley maybe!!?
Is this a straight forward job? To replace the pulley. Dont wanna messs up anything to do wi timing so thought id ask here 1st. Any hints?

you wont mess up the timing just changing the pulley. i watched john take off my bottom pulley off on my 1.9 to change timing belt. the main worry will be undoing the bolt ...

Gary-where does the timing belt attach to mate? Does it notgo to c/s pulleyas well? Seems sometimes the rattle is louder when i switch rear demister on as it draws more current. Cant wait to take look at it

no theres another little pully behind for the timing belt

yep as mike says there is a little cog behind it . the aux belt pully can be removed without taking that one off so then timin belt will stay in postition ..

there is also a good way of removing the bolt.. you need confidence to do this. put the ratchet onto the bottom pully bolt and trap it left under the subframe. then turn the engine over once with the key. make sure you dont let it start.
its gotta be a quick one turn over. and the bolt undo's perfect...

ive seen it done. and it does it perfect in a second. or you could be there for hours trying to undo it if it wont untighten ..

if you do it this way make sure the socket is on the bolt proper

best thing really is try to undo it manually. with your hands and elbow grease. if you cant get it off try turning engine way but as mike says make sure socket on properly .

Cheers guys for tips. I dont think id try the engine-start method unless i was gettin the serious hump trying.
My luck is so bad something'd go wrong!
Can pulleys be bought from motor-factors, or u think its an ebay/dealers job.
Saw them on ebay for £39. Prob near £80 from Peugeot

you can get them from motor factors mate. 8)
i would defo source a good pulley from a factors. not ebay. you dont know what country they have come from on ebay. propably a far eastern country made cheap :D

And they probably aren't damped, which is a bad thing. I got an Akron Malo for 90€, it's well made.

Just replaced starter£65,and starts instantly in the cold so a lot happier just now anyway

ok mate. just be carefull with the bottom pulley. if you think its on its way out get it chaged as soon as possible. you dont want that breaking up and letting the auxbelt fly off. it could be a possible engine knacked job if the auxbelt gets jammed in the timin belt

I wouldn't try this job if I wasn't confident about it, undoing that nut is a pig by all accounts - you'd either need a 12' long scaffold pole with your socket welded to it (joke) or 'shock it' undone in a Jasper-style "you've got one shot at it" kinda thing.
