I have a 2L Manual 1996 vintage 406. She had about 160K on her clock when I took her up to 125mph on a German autobahn. I could have likely gone to 130, 140 I think. Can't remember what the rev meter said but she still had lots more power.
I slowed down because seeing the rate of knots people traveling the same way as me were zipping past my window was a little un nerving.

Welcome to the forums!

Not meaning to be cheeky or anything, but have you got an import with a metric speedo?
From the 'top speed of 131mph' bit I'm guessing you've got yourself a turbo, but mine only does about 50-60 in 2nd. 0-60 in under 6.5 is ludicrously fast too, should be looking around 9-10 secs for an unmodified turbo
Mine will get up to 120 happily enough (with that nice little 4000rpm oomph you get at 100-110!) but then struggles to hit 130 as all the torque dies away.
So far I can't find a long enough piece of road without camers or other users to see what she could do!
Toll roads off-peak are good. Of course I don't mean the M6 toll road because that'd be illegal and stuff *whistle*, I mean the Autobahn yeah... Just be aware the 406 can be shoved about quite viciously by the wind at those kinds of speeds

What sort of revs are you taking it to in 1st gear to get 50? I wouldn't have thought a standard petrol box would allow for those sorts of speeds without massive revs...could be a diesel box I suppose?
I can't get more than about 35 in 1st at about 6,750 where the limiter is (may be higher on a turbo).

as its a W reg and auto it wont be turbo, its ew10j4, not the fastest in the world, my xu10j4r (essentially the same engine) manual will barely hit 60 in 9 seconds, even the v6 auto takes 8.5 seconds to get to 60, so it must be a speedo in km/h
