Well after going out and starting the car this morning i moved car out of drive way and went to shut the gate to be confronted by a nice puddle of diesel on the drive! :(

anyway i thought the diesel leak was coming from the high pressure pump but when i had a look this morning the filter housing was covered in diesel and there was diesel sitting on the lid.
so ive been on fleabay and purchased a new filter and o ring but i have never changes 1 so does anyone have any tips?
it looks like someone has already had a large set of grips round it.

I have the 2.0 HDI 110 engine with the siemens housing and 3 pipes on top. (04 c5 estate)

Any help would be great.
Thanks.

I've changed hundreds of these over the years, I use a couple of methods depending how tight the screw on lid is, after draining the filter housing using the drain plug at the bottom and the pipe.....

Take a large flat blade screwdriver and offer it up to one of the ridges on the lid, then hit the end of the screwdriver with the palm of your hand to shock the lid free, then unscrew it by hand and lift up the lid being careful not to damage the pipes or break them off.

Flick out the seal ring with a small screwdriver and clean out the filter housing using brake cleaner.

Fit a new seal (ridge at the top) and smear a little diesel around the seal.

Clip the new filter into the top of the housing and gently lower it into the housing taking care not to dislodge the new seal.

Screw the plastic ring on after spraying WD40 in the threads and carefully tighten by hand as tight as you can get it, then get your big screwdriver and gently tap it a bit tighter.

You could remove the whole housing and fit it carefully into a vice to change the filter.

To bleed it up if yours has a hand pump....

Take off the pipe going to the high pressure pump and put your finger over the end of the pipe coming out of the filter.

Pump the bulb letting air out then put your finger over the pipe to stop air getting back in... keep pumping until diesel floods out then fit the pipe back on....start the car and give it a rev.

ALWAYS be careful not to break off any pipes.

OK Jasper's just put the suggestions I was about to make firmly in the ground...

If you haven't got a priming bulb, turn the ignition on and off a couple of times before trying to start (worked for me at least)

If it is the o ring that's failed would this cause fuel to sit on top of the filter housing on the lid?
