Rattle in 110 HDi engine

Post by christian »

I have a rattle in my engine 2.0 ltr HDi 110 engine. I use to have a small puffing noise when i stopped the enine, but not sure if there is any links to my new rattl, that has got louder over the past couple of weeks.
I have read that the front camshaft pulley has a problem sometimes. The rattle either comes from the pulleys area or from the tappets area, unsure!! It sounds rather tinny sometimes. I found a flat piece of metal about 20 cm long laying on the alternator a couple of weeks ago, but could not find where it had come from? It looks like it could be a expensive job to find what is the cause and repair with all the bits and bods that will be taken off and replaced. Any ideas please!!

I have a random tick or a rattle on mine. Usually at idle or around 2000rpm.

I have a funny feeling it's the power steering pump.
See if yours is all covered in an oily residue?

Firstly, hello and welcome to the site. Secondly STOP DRIVING YOUR CAR! There's a good chance that's the crank pulley disintegrating. If it lets go it'll probably drop the cam belt and at the very least you'll be adding 8 rockers to your shopping list.

There used to be some pictures on here but they've sadly died :( There's a pic of what you're looking for on this thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8229&p=79298&hilit ... jpg#p79298 about 8 pictures down.

This fits the description of the innards of the bottom pulley.

These stick out and scrape on stuff, which you should hear as a regular knock/rattle that increases with engine speed.

I drove round like this for months  (bad idea)
Cost over £400 to get fixed   (I was ripped off)

BTW: the power steering pump will drip into the alternator so unless you want to change both: get it fixed!
