hi there new to the site and my first time having a hdi..
i have a 2001 110hdi great car except for the rear box needs replacing... do i go to the local garage and buy the standard fit or is it worth putting something like stainless onto the vehicle also without being a boy racer is there any other subtle mods that can be done to improve the vehicle... many thanks,matt

the best mod you can do is chuck the diesel and fit a v6

but seeing that isnt very practical it depends what you want.if you go to a dealer you will pay big bucks but get a good quality item,if you go to a exhaust place you will get it cheaper and a 2 year warranty.the other option is to go to a place that makes exhaust and have one made,but if you just haveing a backbox you wont be getting any power gains just a diffrent sound.

Other option is adapt a second hand stainless zorst from a V6 coupe to fit, and decat it whilst at it

I dropped lucky and picked up a Powerflow for £100, and my mate made a downpipe to suit for £60

sounds like i might have to spend some time on ebay.... i think cat back stainless is the way im going to go with it even though i love the v6 grunt i love my fuel economy more

ive got a stainless (powerflow) backbox, its not off a 406 but it couid be Modified to fit.,

it was only on the car a couple of months so its just sat there going to waste,

if you offer me some good cash i might be tempted to sell my twin exit stainless powerflow that sounds nice

Got my old twin 5" jap can exhaust off my old vec sat in mums garage, maybe I should fit it lol.

Just get a standard back box, there's no performance benefit to be gained. The 406 looks silly with a big pipe sticking out and you'd really struggle to get anything else to fit (you'll see this by the way the exhaust routes).

It's a bendy old route and the back box inlet connection has to be offset for it to match the tail pipe position.











You'll get a new back box for about £65.00 fitted, have a ring around.

You don't need to fit one with an enormous fart-can tailpipe; a well-designed and well thought out stainless steel exhaust does not have to be for the boy racers only.

I agree that only buying a backbox isn't going to give you any real performance lift, but it will have an effect on the exhaust note.

If you're going with a stainless system, get a full cat-back exhaust designed and fitted specifically for your car and engine size. I went with Powerflow, but I've also heard good things about Longlife and Tony Banks Exhausts as well.

I found a slight but noticeable performance boost from the exhaust on my old 1.8. The effect it had on my Coupe was less pronounced, but it's a much more powerful car anyway (about 50 HP more than the 1.8 was).

When speaking to the exhaust company, tell them that you want the car to be nice and quiet when cruising, to give a nice gentle burble when idle, and to give a nice growl when accelerating hard. They can do that for you without compromising on performance or function. That way, your car won't be too loud and irritating at cruising speed, and won't piss your neighbours off when you leave for work in the mornings. And it won't be a race invitation to the boy racers next time they pull up beside you at the lights.

The system I had fitted to my 1.8 saloon was £320 all-inclusive (now sold to Shadowboy following the demise of that car), and the one currently fitted to my 2.2 Coupe was £360 all-inclusive. Well worth it in my books, because I know I won't have to replace a rusting exhaust mid-section on back-box any time soon.

On a HDi you can remove the back box to an open-pipe and it won't sound much different, Diesel combustion doesn't go "Bang" in the cylinders like petrol does so they just make a low gruff kinda sound.
