My 406 is finally free...

Post by OdinEidolon »

... of the dreaded FAP!
After having done about 450 miles in limp mode due to a bad MAF sensor, when I installed the new one I had the pleasure to find that during those miles the FAP sensors went mad and that it was indicated as punctured.
150 limp-mode miles later I'm back with no FAP and less problems!

I uploaded my own original map defapped on saturday then on Sunday defapped it. It took me 5 damn hours due to:
- low ground clearance, I was able to lift it only 15cm on one side and 40cm on the other
- damn little metal tube that sense pressure, I tried to detach it where it's linked to, near the front antiroll bar, but found the clip holding it to the plastic tube incredibly hard to open. I had to cut it away at the joining between the metal and the plastic.

I was able not to remove the rear cat/silencer/whatever-it's-called from its hangings, I only had to separate the middle section between the FAP and the tube (the joining lip was hard as hell! how the hell you enlarge it? I had to put a screw with two nuts inside and slowly separate the nuts one from the other), pushing and swearing a little and it came off.

No problem whatsoever removing the FAP and destroying it too. Only had a small problem on refitting it, since out of 4 screws the last one would not want to go back in place, I had to use a thinner screw, I do not know why. Does the gasket have an orientation?

Performance: I surely noticed less vibrations when pulling from 1400-1500 rpms and when turning the car off. Maybe a little quicker revving too, but this may be to the 600+ miles I did in limp-mode previously!

Well done Adriano! 8)

It's not easy without a hoist, but I have removed and replaced mine with only a hydraulic jack and axle stands. The gasket should not have any special orientation.

I don't think there is any noticeable performance gain compared with a clean FAP, but it is easy to convince yourself otherwise!

At least you have much less to wrong now. 8)

Very much true.

I too have an hydraulic jack but only 2x stands, thus I had to use some hard bricks to keep the car on. Also another problem I had was that I had no idea how to lift the rear with the jack and then support it with a stand: there is just not enough space on the reinforced sill to fit both the jack and the stand. On the front I can jack from the front wishbone but from the rear where can I lifit it?

Thats a fair question, i'm about to follow the handbrake how to in a bit but not sure where the best place to put the stands is? :?

For that you can use the standard jack you have in the boot: jack from the reinforced sill, on one side of the reinforcement, and fit the jack stand on the other side, there's enough space if you do not use the hydraulic jack but the standard one.

This is because you do not have to lift the car a lot and the standard hand jack will be sufficient, I guess.
