just been looking on a mondeo forum just out of boredom really and i read an an article about a ecu relearn where you disconnect your battery for a length of tine approx 1 hour then reconnect and let your car idle for 5 mins then 1200rpm for 5mins then take it out for a 5 mile thrash to teach the ecu your driving style i wondered if this is also the same for pug hdi the guy who did it said it made quite a difference would it affect my remap ie reset to normal settings? and would it help the settings now ive added an intercooler

By disconnecting your battery you are soft resetting your ecu. so basically returning it to the out of the factory state. The ECU does slightly learn your driving style and adjusts the fueling etc as appropriate.
When you have a Remap, the programming is changed on the EPROM (May be calling the chip wrong) and so in a sense that is your now 'out of the factory' state. So soft resetting will only return the car back to the state it was in after the remap.

will possibly help a little bit if you have replaced the intercooler.
Not sure about the idling and thrashing part though. (is your driving style always driving it like you stole it?)

been thinking about this one if my cars been remapped and i was to try this then surely it wouldnt lose its upgraded settings because theres surely people who have experienced battery problems since their remap without it reverting backto factory settings i did things back to front,remap before intercooler conversion and the the intercooler seemed to make minimal difference i wondered if i was to reset it it might take the ic conversion in to account and adjust likewise,im curious to try it but a bit apprehensive about losing my remap dont want to fork out for that again

As you said you should have really got the intercooler, then remap. the difference you will notice from the intercooler through a soft reset will be minimal.

i dont know if it would make any difference but im interested in trying it as i dont want the expense of a remap although my remap was only £180 i presume this was unlikely to be a live remap?? i suppose you get what you pay for,would be interested in comparing my car with another with similar mods if theres any one in north-east/yorkshire area

ok the ecu contains a ram chip and a eeprom , the eeprom contains "the map" this is the fueling/spark/warmup/ etc etc this will not change unless you plug into a pc and start editing it.

a ecu reset will erase the rom memory, this contains error codes/a few small tweaks for accel enrichment. not much else.

the whole reset your ecu and all your cars problems will dissapear is complete pap thats spouted about most forums, probably by some mechanic who does not understand how a FI system works or even the parameters an ecu uses to access the spark timing or injector duration.

most modern ecus are consistantly learning anyway and modify to the way you drive consistantly,

an ecu reset will make no difference really except make your car idle high/low for a bit until the ecu resorts pwm idle.
