Exhaust advice

Help! My car is falling apart :( The clutch is slowly slipping when booting it, so that will need changing soon. The bottom mount is, I believe, gone, so that needs changing by a garage. Preferably at the same time as the clutch. Would I be better off replacing the flywheel with a solid one? Don't know. And it's coming up to a cam-belt renewal. (Jasper - any chance of you driving down to Bristol for a nice job? :))

But the more immediate issue is... Last week, on the motorway, the engine developed a lovely sports car noise - helped by the rear exhaust falling off. It has completely rusted through and the flange which connects to the mid-section of the exhaust just perished.

Not to worry - eBay and £42 later, a new box was fitted. Only when I was fitting it, I noticed that the flange bit on the mid-section exhaust was also on its way out. I give it a few months till that completely rusts through and falls off. I was wondering if there's a way to fix that? The rest of the mid-section looks OK and still has some life in it, so it would be a shame to through the whole thing away because of a rusted join.

I've been looking for various methods of repairing that, but haven't really found anything. I guess I could get a screw-on flange from Bay of e and a section of a pipe along with a coupler. But all that together is already £30 - expensive when a new mid-section costs £45 all-in. Is it better to just replace it or is there a more economical method to fix it?

(Alternatively, there's a Ford Mundane option... but that's more expensive than the above!)

I might be able to fix something up for you....helped out changing the clutch on one of our illustrious member's cars last saturday, changed the clutch, DMF and lower mount.

Lower mount was a bit of silly job, but it was probably me being brain dead on saturday :D

It looks a bugger of a job so today i done what lozz suggested, i filled the holes with bits of hosepipe and sealed it with a black rubber one part sealant (silicone type tube) will let you know if it works... Hope so the sealant was about the same price as the replacement part but i cant afford to pay someone to do it at the moment.

It isn't as bad a job as you think really.

Big driveshaft nut undone and knock the shaft in a bit, undo the 2 11mm bolts on the inner bearing, undo the bottom ball joint nut and knock the lower arm until the ball joint comes free, drain gearbox oil and pull out the driveshaft.

Undo the bolts holding the mounting to the subframe and mounting block at back of engine.

Undo bolts holding mounting bracket to back of engine and remove mounting block.

Take the mounting block to a garage and get them to press in a new mount, either that or cut out the old mount, clean up the mount block and new mount then use a vice and press the new mount in.

Refit everything in reverse order then refill gearbox with 2 litres of oil.

Problem I had was being a donkey using my mates press, I was behaving like a complete novice.

Cheers for the advice Jasper, i'll see how it goes but if it needs doing i think i'll buy my mate a few crates of strongbow and ask him nicely to do it for me, Especially as his boss has a press over there and did tell me on the weekend that we can have the garage one Saturday afternoon. (i do think he said that so he can go home and leave my mate working though)

How long do you recon it took you?

If it's any help, the 'A Team' changed my clutch, DMF, bottom mount, diff oil seals and a drop link in 5 hours start to finish, including 3 trips to fetch more bits and giving the dog a stroll. 8)

it is second or third :( also just had 2 front wheel bearings 2 strut top bearings and 2 drop

This is my first replacement engine mount, which we changed because it was showing very early signs of deterioration and the driveshaft was out anyway for the clutch / DMF swap. Not too bad, at almost 180k.

Well i'm not sure if this is any good to someone but it seemed to have worked, no idea how long for only time will tell but theres hardly any movement in the engine now and it dont jump about and clonk like it used to when turning the egnition off.

I cant find the sealant i used on ebay but it's body plus one part sealant adhesive in black it's just like rubber i'll post a pic of it once the wifey person goes back to work and i can have my pc back.
