Not if yours is a 70ltr tank? you must be doing something like 20mpg? full tank on my 2.0hdi i get between 650 and a 1000 miles depending on wether it's school runs or motorway (dont quote me on the 1000 mind i've never done that in one go)

Not sure how accurate the specs are on auto trader but they're quoting 26.2 urban - 45.6 extra urban, 35.8 combined and a 70 litre tank.
By my reckoning you should get somewhere near 400 miles of town driving, 700 motorway miles, 550 combined on a 'full tank'.

If you're filling up when the light comes on you've probably got a couple of gallon in reserve which should still give you 480 miles.

Those figures are usually calculated on an indoor rolling road with miss daisy driving in her slippers so take them with a large pinch of salt.

Fill the tank when the light comes on and fill it again when it comes back on, it's the only real way to judge your MPG's.

The usual oil and filter changes, tyre pressures, injector cleaner and a gentle right foot will help but you need to do a brim-to-brim check to calculate your actual MPG's to start with.

Apologies for not being overly helpful but my best advice would be part-ex for a diesel :supafrisk:

The Haynes book of lies states there is 7l left in the tank once to light comes on.

Should be getting more than that mate, I'm struggling to remember but I used to have a 1.8LX and I'm pretty sure I used to get around 30 - 34mpg out of it, that kind of economy should get you about 450 miles out of a tank (afaik all the 406's had 70l tanks, if you do have a 60l tank that would explain this thread  ).

My 2.0l petrol (HPi) estate is doing an average of around 31mpg over the last 6 months, average fill up is 67.07l (I do like to play fuel light bingo but apparently I'm not very good at it  ) which gives an average of 456.7 miles per fill up.

If you've got an Android phone you might want to check out a free app called FuelLog, it's excellent!

It probably depends heavily on how it's driven, but the motoring press more or less said the 1.8 wasn't powerful enough. Diesels make a better job of lugging a 406 around. Mine, (which is probably the least economical diesel you can get, short of an auto, still does about 650 miles to a tankful).

I'd say my 2 litre D8 is probably under powered as well. The combined MPG on Auto Trader is only about 30 to the gallon, I probably don't get much more than several hundred miles out of a tank. But I only put in £20 a fortnight anyway.
