Hi,
I've to a 2001 2l hdi (90) estate. Question is how long should the water pump last. i had terminal pump failure
this morning. Had a grumbling noise for a couple of days but couldn't locate it. This morning on the way home
the noise became very bad and temp shot up.
Got the car recovered and been told the water pump was completely shot.
Had a cambelt kit and water pump replacement 2 yrs (28k) ago. Surely they should last longer.
Peugeot quoted £670 to do belt and pump, local garage quoted £650...
What should I be looking at to get this work done.

That's expensive. I had cambelt and tensioners, water pump and aux belt fitted by garage for £250, though I expect it may depend on where you live.
As to life of the water pump maybe you were unlucky but I would have expected longer than 2 years.

AFAIK water pump recommended to be changed with every other cambelt, therefore 10 years or 200k.
Therefore
£650 seems to be the going rate down here. Again:

I would bet on the timing belt tension having been too tight.

Just before christmas had cambelt kit, water pump, bottom pulley, aux belt etc done at main dealer. They quoted £495. Got another quote from another garage at £395. Main dealer then quoted £375 using non peugeot parts with 12 months guarantee. They were desperate for work at the time !!

I found a garage a bit cheaper to me. Cost £482 for water pump, cambelt kit and front drop links, mechanic found a broken one.
Think the pump was terminal, what do you think

Still sounds too dear. For mine I was quoted roughly £350 for the cambelt, would have thought around another £50ish for the pump.
