Back On Road BUT Alls Not Well... HDi 90 Now Cutting Out

Well after taxing the car from the begining of the month the EML is on and the car has cut out 4 times.
Done it 3 times over the weekend, so back to the garage today, diag said injector circuit again but nothing obvious so Rich cleared the faults and said to bring it back in tomorrow weather the fault was back or not for another scan...
Well took the dog for his walk with it tonight and as I pulled into the carpark bleedin EML lit up again... then on way home just pulling out of a junction it cut out
When it cuts out it will not restart start straight away... probably about 30+ secs pass with no hint of firing before it starts, I'm very wary of cranking it to much as I've just spent a packet replacing the ECU after it got spiked
Im thinking there might be something loose after the previous work but what...

Another 5 cut outs today, once after leaving the garage where it ran perfectly and 4 tonight within 10 mins just trying to get of the street... gave up with that idea, seems to be getting worse.
Garage have surgested a sticky injector or that the ECU is still faulty... options are send ECU back or get the injectors tested not sure which way to go with it at the moment.
Is there anything else I should check? The fault that comes up is "Injector Circuit" dont know the actual number

Does this one have the multifunction relay in the box with the ecu or is it part of it? These are known to give problems...

There is a Brown coloured electric thingy in the box where the ECU is... what does that do then? I'll have a check of its connections in a bit... won't be able to get out of the house without walking the dog first

put the car back on the drive... started no probs (eml on tho) gave the odd stutter but kept revs up and it kept running, had a look under the bonnet giving connections a wobble to see if anything happened... an odd stutter now and again but nothing I could bring on myself, switched it off unplugged and repluged connections, all nice and tight. Started it again no probs, ran for a while fine then cut out but restarted within 20 secs and ran fine again...
I think its something to do on the fuel side prob an injector sticking as the car has sat since June and I over the last couple of years has occasionally been doing the same as Doggy's had in this post viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14490&hilit=wobble#p136113

I don't fancy paying the garage anymore as they want £30 per injector+carriage+labour+vat just to test them, so that would be another £200ish (before replacing any faulty injectors) on top of the £400 I've just spent having the ECU changed.
So options now are, sell as spares/repairs or learn about Diesels as I quite like driving it I'm going with the latter for a bit, plan is
1;Sticking some injector cleaner in the fuel filter and run it through first
2;Then maybe pressure regulator? replace or clean?
3;Then try and get s/hand injector(s) and swapping them out

Any other ideas or alternative routes should I take?

At work we put a lot of stuff through Carwoods in Coventry, When I asked about injector refurbs for my old 406 I was told they'd test my injectors for free and £25 to £30 to refurb per injector on my XUD (HDI injectors will presumably cost a bit more).
Like I said we put a lot of business their way so they might be discounted rates but worth giving them a ring.

Might be worth liberating some from a scrapper and sending them off for refurb so you're not car-less, but then again it isn't running anyway with all the cutting out.

Just noticed on their web site they do fuel pumps, turbo's and alternators as well, been dealing with them for 10 years and never new that!!

Another question... whats the difference between say my injectors with the number 0445110 062 and those of another 2l 406 with the number 0445110 072?
Would it be ok to use injectors with defferent last three digits if a swapped all 4?

Found a set of injectors on fleabay matching my numbers out of an 84k engine, just have to wait for them to arrive.

Decided to do the spill test today...



Labled them as 1 being the belt side of the engine...
1 and 2 are very similar so I'm happy with them, 3 is close'ish... but 4 is quite a bit different. Think it may be the first to get changed, but then again number 3

Took the fuel pressure reg of the pump (lost my t30's down the back somewhere in the process ) on Sunday and gave it a clean, changed the fuel filter and half filled bowl with injector cleaner... car ran perfectly on the drive, took it out last night for a spin, eml off... gave it a good thrash down the bypass all fine. Took it to work today... cut out on the way home
Now what gets me about this stalling problem is that as long as I wait a few seconds before trying it always restarts
The car had sat idle for 3 months till the ecu fault was found, so I feel something thats happening due to the lack of use, dirty/sticky sensor

I do have my replacement injectors now, just havn't got round to changing them as yet, expect them to take a while so have to wait till I have a spare day.

Update... just taken it for a 8mile spin, ran perfect, tho eml on... got home turned off, restarted eml goes out ... have found this post http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=28296, seems the same probs as me, but doesn't say if he ever cured it

Ok time for an Update... I have done nothing else to the car since the previous post

The reason... eml has not reappeared and the car has run faultlessly since don't know if i've now tempted fate, probably
but untill it plays up again Im touching nothing...

A dodgy contact perhaps?

My 406 is spending a fair bit of time unused (see my sig) but last month I had the pleasure of driving it while my pa & nephew were here.My nephew spotted the reversing lights were out so I investigermerated. Long story short, turns out to have been the contacts to the switch on top of the gearbox. I had the connector off twice, spraying WD etc. in there, nut in the end I had to slightly bend the pins and then it was ok. Thing is, as everything under the bonnet features similar connectors, what's to stop something else going the same way?

Anyway, I'm glad things are working ok now, fingers crossed they stay that way

Well it's Feckin doing it again... Had a 80ml round trip to do this morning and as entered the slip road on to the motorway the car stuttered and flashed up the eml then cut out 1/2 ml latter on the motorway... pulled over onto the hard shoulder and it restarted we then carried on with it giving a little stutter every now and then till we got to our destination.
On leaving to come home it started no prob eml on tho but then cut out twice... got on the motorway to come home ran fine a little stutter evry once in a while but nothing I could provoke myself... got home turned it off restarted it and the eml goes off
Its something to do with the fuelling I think, it's not the crank sensor as when it cut out and was rolling in gear it was indicating the revs... so that leaves Injectors? fuel regulator? Injectors I have so maybe I should have a go at changing them...

Took it out again this afternoon... stalled again eml back on, pick up a couple bits of shopping got home eml back off

I know i've mentioned the injectors but I'm not convinced it's that... when you turn the ignition off what actually stops the HDi engine? It wouldn't be the fuel pump as it would run on a little... so what actually stops the engine...

It's got a load of relays in it. If it's knackered, the engine can cut out randomly... Sound familiar?

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15955 shows my experiences with this. Basically replacing the little relay box next to the ECU cured it, but that ended up being caused by a bad earth!

The relay box cost me about £5 to replace 2nd hand, so it's definitely worth trying. I know just how bad random cut-outs can be
