Oh dear

Post by scotty73 »

School run this morning the mrs heard a big clunk then what sounded like a fan belt squeek (i heard this from the living room) she carried on going so i was waiting for her to get back.
It sounded fine when she got back but when i just went to started i heard a rumbling kind of sound so popped the bonnet and saw bits of rubber on top of the ecu box.. Further investigation found this.

To the untrained eye it looks like the belt has slipped off but because the alternator pully thingy has moved? someone please help and feel free to move the thread as i couldn't think where to put it.

This might be a stupid question but is the aircon run off the same belt?

Cheers Steve i was thinking electrical but wernt sure.

In that pic lozz posted it looks like GEN has slipped the belt after the nut coming off somehow, the aircon was moving freely when i started the car but it'd dont work so i thought that had something to do with it but it sounds more like the alternator has locked up.
A quick ebay search i've found this one.

Not sure if it's the right one i've not looked into it yet been trying to contact my lmf.

Scotty,
your alternators Fubard mate,
so you best option is Find one in a Breakers yard, There over 100 quid for a New one  going off internet prices Gawd knows what the price of them will be in
the shops, :(

pull the Tensioner up and lock it off use a Nail or thin small allen key any thing thats thin enough/strong enough to lock the tensioner.
slip the belt off and check each pulley turns freely (except the crank pulley)

Local motor factor?

Says it's for a 1.9 or a 2.1. I'd look on Service Box but I already know there's a list as long as your wotsit :frown:

Edit: wot Lozz said, try and get it as close to your build as you can...

This is an interesting concept: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-306-3 ... 1e655d260a So there's more to it than just a pulley. Maybe all will be revealed when you get the belt off :?

Scotty,
iforgot to Mention,

if you end up replacing the Alternator, Make sure you put the car to sleep,(! 3 min rule!) before taking the Battery leads off,
if you move the ecu out the Way wrap it up in something, Bin liners or anything that will protect it,

I saw that and was wondering if it would work.

3 minute rule? when i last changed the battery i just disconnected it then put a new one on and drove off should i have done different?
Just spoke to my lmf and he said last week he done the same job on another 406 it was the clutch in the alternator it cost the guy 97 notes in total to get it referbed but that was with 12 quid for the belt and 25 quid fitting... and he might be able to come out and do it today.

I'm tempted cos i need the car for school in the morning.

All sorted it needed a new pulley and two of the bearings inside had crumbled so refurb 65 notes, think the belt is about 11 quid and 25 quid labour .
So i'm 100 quid light but my hands are clean and all was done in 3 hours thats with them taking it for the refurb.

Now i need to do a runner because i told the lmf i'd square up with him tomorrow.
