Hi all i have a 2.0 HDI Xsara 90 that whines when slowing down through the gears this disappears when dipping the clutch it has always made the noise since i bought the car in november but wondered is this normal gears change fine. Also how do i change the gearbox oil is it difficult and what type of oil do i need.

*Remove wheel arch liner,

*Gear oil grade 75w/80
* litres 1.85 - 2.0

How do i check the level is it where you fill it up

filling it :You fill it until you see the Gear oil start to trickle out of the filling hole,

Checking it : if its at the correct level some will leak out when you take the bolt out if its at the correct level already,

(Check it/fill it with the car on level ground )

ive just noticed your looking for info on the Xsara
for somereason imiss read that the above is info for 406


the Xsaras are prone for gearbox whine, idoubt a change of oil will solve it but its worth a try

heres the diagram for a Xsara.

i see some triple qx ep 75/90 oil is that any good and if not what would be the difference

You need 75w / 80 mate

its wont do the gearbox anygood in the long run putting in an incorrect grade:

When ihad Citroen Xsaras igot Gearbox oil for them from Wilkinsons, its very cheap there and goodquality oil

406 /xsaras have the same Hdi engine so Make your self comfy here mate,

If you need anymore info, just give us a shout.


Seriously tho on the xsara gearbox Whine,dont let it put you off the car if a change of oil dont cure it
ithink Many a Xsara owner justs learns to live with it,

do you mind me asking what software gives you those diagrams is it something i can buy

its Auto data,

you can download it off the Web,
to buy it ithink its about 300 notes or more at a guess
