My bet is the bottom pulley has started to disintegrate. Mine did something similar; strands of metal ribbon stick out of it and catch, causing this type of noise.

I ran with mine like that (although not as bad) for months. However, the received wisdom on here is to fix this immediately because if it gets worse or fails completely then it can take out your cambelt with it and then the show's over.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Yes, check the alternator drive belt urgently. If its frayed it would cause this noise, and when it goes it could destroy the engine as it can take out the cam belt. A new one should be £10ish

Oops, something strange is happening to the board, Codgod managed to post the same thing 4 times, I deleted 3 of them and... this one went too. Sorry 'bout that. Oh, also the board's not even recorded that I did anything and it's still showing on the front page

Anyway yes, check belt and pulley as above. If the belt breaks or the pulley drops it, it'll probably end up taking the timing belt out. Not necessarily terminal but you'll at least need 8 new rockers.

Wonder how many times this'll post :frown:

Your best option is to take the Auxbelt off:

and turn each pulley -see if they turn freely and check for play,
Obviously Crank pulley wont turn freely by Hand but if its failing you will feel Movement in it,
ithink they give off a Brown rusty Dust too if there on the way out,
