Cam Belt fitting, very unusual problem.

Yesterday I fitted a new cam belt with new tensioner, guide pulley and water pump (as well as the clutch and exhaust) for our Captain Jack, unfortunately, after I started the engine with the covers on there was a loud rattle from the timing belt casing.

I noticed after starting the engine with the casing off that the timing belt had moved to the edge of the camshaft pulley but thought nothing of it.

Anyway, I removed the covers and noticed the cam belt had been hitting the casings (hence the loud rattle) I suspected a fault with the tensioner so rang my supplier who asked me if I had cleaned up the engine block where the tensioner bolts on as he had a couple of situations similar to mine....now usually I just fit a new tensioner without thinking about cleaning the cylinder block face, in 42 years I've never had a problem like this :shock:

So after spraying a little brake cleaner onto a rag and wiping the block face I refitted the tensioner and started the engine.....the belt instantly moved into the middle of the camshaft pulley and all was well.

I refitted the casings, started the engine and all was well, no noise, no issues :D

In conclusion, if you are going to replace your cam belt and tensioner plus guide pulley and water pump, clean the engine block where the tensioner and guide pulley fit before you fit the new ones!

Strange one that Jasper good to know though , if you dont do a high mileage how
long before you should change your belt John ? Am asking cos my tension pulleys
are squeeking and wondering if should have the lot done .

When i bought my old Cavalier many moons ago my mechanic said for your piece of mind I'd advise you get the belt done normally anyway but i can hear the tensioner so allow a few extra quid and I'll do the job in the next week.

The mechanic was also a mate so he wern't out to earn money, I'd get them done mate but Jasper can give you a better idea.

The book indicates every 6 years or 96,000 miles, but I would change the kit at 50,000 for safety.

Can't remember when I did yours Lou, I wouldn't think it needs doing yet, but if you are worried about it have it checked out.

Cheers John , think it was just over 4 yrs ago and i aint done 50k yet,
more worried about the pulley's ,will check them .
