evening all my 2001 110hdi has suffered a lack of economy over the past couple of months, my local garage found oil sitting on the bottom of the intercooler but could not find any leaks to explain the slightly louder whistle i can hear from the turbo...
they did try to say i was just making it up or hearing things, but as im sure with the rest of you....you know your own car and how it drives.
so my question is could it just be the intercooler or is there a possible other problem...cheers

i would say is just a build up of carbon and smegma in the intake manifold and back of the intake valves
the best remedy for this is an italian tune up and disabling of the egr valve to stop it happening any more

Do you have any loss of performance or increased smoke, (could easily be a boost leak).

You always get some oil in the intercooler it's not a problem at all.
The bottom hose of the I/C can wear through underneath due to excessive engine movement (the rubber hose scrapes on a radiator mounting bracket and eventually puts a hole in it) when you get 'the hole' you will be greeted by the *loudest* wooshing/blasting noise you've ever heard - people were turning around in the street when mine went
Tyre pressures are very important (need to be 2.3 bar - 33PSi).
Check the air filter - might be filthy?
Check the Turbo/IC hoses for tightness too.

ok guys i have no loss of power i have just replaced thei/c as it was leaking oil around the core, all the pipes are good..
the noise seems to be more in line wth where the turbo is sat so im starting to think maybe a seal or something...
do these have gaskets fitted or is it more of a flange seal...
