Hi new to this forum, but belong to two other Peugeot forums, which do not help a great deal.

I have a 406 2.0L HDI Est, which after a period of replacement parts still having a problem, need to check now the compression, to help with the diagnostics of the fault.

what I would like to know is what thread is the glow plugs and/or the injectors that the compression tester would fit into.

I am looking at the following compression tester on eBay link below would this be ok?

eBay item number : 110888089961

Thanking you in advance
Rgds
Steve

yes the ebay item should fit and the only place to fit it is in the glow hole

I didn't think people bothered compression testing diesels any more, preferring a sniff test on the coolant (it's green, greeeeeen I tells thee!)

What's actually going on with the car?

I bet the Head Gasket's gone - do a sniffer test first. It's rare but can happen if the coolant is neglected.

Unless the pistons/big ends are royally rogered (you'd hear this) then the Compression side of the engine is reliable. There can be trouble if the intake has sucked in water and hydro-locked the engine and possibly if the cambelt has slipped and thrown the 'timing'.

Another indication of trouble is the coolant hoses feeling like they want to explode at any minute - showing pressurisation from the cylinder block.

Let us know how you find things but we'll all try to help you if we can.

Thanks Guys.

alot to write about it would be easier to go to the following link:

There is also a utube video to hear and see.

hope that helps

ok so what you have is gray and black smoke not white, the gray and black points to the injectors you can check this with pp2000 in the measured parameters part of the engine ecu. it will tell you the injection correction value and how much fuel is being injected

gray is lots of unburned diesel this should make the air taste funny and black is not so much unburned diesel

post your results

this is not a compression fault

To eliminate the injector without pp2000 swap the bad cylinder's injector with a good cylinder's injector and see if the fault follows the bad injector.

The link to Peugeot Forums says he has PP. I just watched the video - that really isn't right!

I thought HDi injectors either worked or they didn't but I'm liking the overfueling idea.

Having pp is a bonus then :D

Listening to the engine note there is a definite serious misfire, if it had been a petrol engine I would have said there was a valve down, but this one seems like it could be a different compression problem, maybe head gasket, but there does appear to be some overfueling there for whatever reason.

Because i'm old school I would have swapped injectors for the simple reason that I could see in front of me whether it works or not then move on to the next possibility.

This won't be easy to ID.

Does sound a bit like the 'heavy' knock you get from one cylinder with a faulty injector. PP2000 should show an unusually high injected volume correction for one or more cylinders if this is the case. (When I looked into it with mine, I came a cross a description of how the ecu does it - info from the crank & cam sensors is used to determine how much the engine 'accelerates' in response to each injection cycle, it then adjusts the injected volume to balance out the differences and compensate for wear etc). Obviuosly, with a knackered injector, it can't adjust enough, then you get lumpy idling etc.

If you can't track it that way, you might be able to find the culprit by unplugging the injector electical connectors one at a time - it will light the eml / give an antipollution fault immediately and run very badly, but you might be able to see which one stops the smoke

no they still suffer sticking needles and body damage

the reason i don't think its a compression fault is, that i think there would be a lot of gray smoke along with the miss at idle and not just when revved and held there

Ouch! Never seen such a bad issue on an HDI engine before. Would a faulty inject have caused the oil to spill out of the EGR valve? And PP should also show a faulty injector. Does it say anything while the engine is running?

Also, that seemed like blue smoke to me as well... does that not mean that oil is being burnt?

P.S. Love your conversation with the wife

Ok, thanks Guys.

I will start with getting a compression tester, checking that first.

Then, if ok, looking at dealing with the injectors.

LOL, Captian Jack, never get your wife to help with cars unless they know what they are doing! simple single task, I thought they could multi task!

Please as there is no fault showing, PP2000 does not come with a manual which makes it hard work to work with, unless you know or find by chance.

Thanking you in advance
