engine not starting

hi everyone,
i have a 406 hdi, 90bhp. a week ago the water pump went, it was making a noise, and coolant leaking. straight away i new is the pump. i had to drive the car to my friends garage so i could change the pump. That messed up the whole thing, and what i was hoping it wont happen. the engine got blocked. i managed to tow it to the garage, opened it up, and the timing belt was half worn as the water pump pulley was stuck. Now i managed to get the camshaft and crankshaft timed, by locking both on the lock position, as described in Haynes manual. closed up every thing, now, when i try to start it the starter moves, but the engine wont fire up. it sounds like something is holding it back.
My thoughts are the valves. could they be bent or broken and they are probably hitting the pistons.
If anyone has anything same happening or has any ideas, pls advise. thank you

Hi,

best thing to do ithink,
is remove the Rocker cover and see if any of the Followers are Broke,
normaly theyre the first to go before bending a Valve,

Theres plenty of topics on the forum on this subject, certainly worth a nosey through some of the Threads,
