From reading posts and due to my cars previous history of many years of short distance stop start driving I'm planning to remove and cleaning the EGR valve.
My mechanical knowledge is limited but I try and make up for it with willingness with the spanners
Can anyone tell me in simple terms exactly where it's located on the 1.9 XUD engine and how to remove and clean it.
I'm learning all the time but if there are any pictures to accompany a how to that would be great.
Many thanks

Hi mate, it is located between the inlet and exhaust manifolds down the back of the engine. You will see a metal pipe coming out of the inlet going into the valve. Even with the engine off it's mounts and tilted forward, access is not great. Also the 2 little bolts that secure it in place will no doubt be seized good and proper and round off easily.
If you take off the tubo pipework and look inside the inlet manifold, you will see what EGR is doing to your engine. You will find 2-3mm of thick greasy coke all round the manifold. By comparison on an XUD with no EGR the inlet is usually very clean.
Given the above I would personally look at disabling or removing it entirely, which I plan to do when I've got some time, along with cleaning out the huge amount of gunk from the manifold.

Hi I've got the 2.1TD and wish to do this also as popped the pipe off the front of the inlet manifold and saw it absolutely caked inside.
2 Questions, how hard is it to disable it? Can I just block off the metal pipe that runs from the exhaust to inlet manifold? I've read somewhere that someone used a 10p piece!
And how can I clean all that crud out the inlet? Will the inlet need to come off?

Thanks for the info, I'm planning to take the manifold off to check for cracks and replace the gasket as I'm still getting a slight exhaust smell in the cabin. Can the manifold be cleaned by a bloody good soak in hot soapy water or is something stronger required ?
Also I've had a look on you tube and found a couple of videos on how to increase the turbo boost pressure. I'm toying with the idea while I'm dismantling stuff in that area anyway. Can you just advance the turbo or do I need to adjust the fuelling as well ?
I'm not looking for masses of extra power but it seems rude not to get acquainted with the turbo while I'm there

im planning to do the same, remove egr and manually clean
a point of concern, the jubilee type clip that hooks up the metal pipe, once i remove that clip its going to be scrap, can i just use a normal jubilee clip to hook it up again?
