406 HDI. Shake on start up and stop!

Hi everyone
As the title states my 2004 406 110 HDI shakes on start up and stop. It's better when cold but once up to running temp it shakes a lot. Sometimes it is a little hard to start when hot as when she's turning over it seems to really struggle and gets slower and slower but then I stop and try again and she's fine. I had a new battery and alternator earlier this year so I feel that's not why it's turning over slowly. Now I'm feeling it may be the flywheel but I just want to know before I go and change this has anyone else ever had the slow turnover and shaking on start and stop. My 406 is a 2.0 110 HDI that has now got 272.000 on the clock and I've never had a clutch or flywheel fitted and I must say once started she drives wonderfully and pulls well. Can anyone shed any light as to what this may be. Thank you.

Why do you think it is the flywheel.
If the flywheel was out of balance or damaged then I would think it would shake across the full range of engine speeds.
I would look at the idle speed and then mixture first. The values should be in Haynes.
Regards,
Colin.

Hi,
Before getting in a panick over the thought of a failing Dmf (un-common on 406s)
Check the lower Back Engine Mount (Bush) it May Be fubard, (common fault)
ive not seen one 406 yet with a failed Dmf.

As Lozz said check the bottom mount first, try rocking the engine with a bar, it shouldn't move more than about an inch alternatively with the engine running blip the throttle and watch for excessive movement. With that mileage you should be able to see visually if the rubber of the mount is damaged if you can get under the car while someone blips the throttle it should show any cracks clearly.
It can be changed on the car but it's a bit of a pig to do, otherwise you need to remove the drive shaft and get it pressed out and a new one fitted.
Personally on 272,000 miles I'd be inclined to remove the driveshaft and put new oil in the gearbox while you're at it.
That doesn't explain the poor starting issue but having the engine bounce around doesn't help anything, my old 1.9 used to hit the bonnet when starting before it had the mounts changed!

Thanks for the input so far
I've lifted the bonnet and started the car and the engine really shakes back and forth but once started smooth as silk. If this is the case and the back engine mount has gone, would it be an idea to do all mounts or is it just the back one that gives out? Also with it starting and sometimes getting slower in turning over could this just be the starter motor? as this has also never been changed in the 272,000 that the car has done, plus it has over the last few weeks started to sound whizzy when starting!

Have someone blip the throttle whilst you watch the engine, it shouldn't move more than an inch or so.
The mounts themselves are quite cheap, and the top one is easy to inspect and change. Topmounts don't fail as often as bottom mounts, but to be honest you might as well change it at the same time.

If it is the bottom mount failing,
Normaly you will hear a Thud/clunk when you switch the engine off,
Dmf fails, from what ive seen when they get to the poor starting stage
you get alot of clatter sound like a bag of nails,

When I stop the engine there is a thud when she comes to a stop. Well it's sounding to be this back mount so I will get this changed over the weekend and see how she is then!
Also is there a separate switch for the cooling fan or does it work off the same switch for the temp gauge?

Could you give me some idea as to the location of them as my fan is not working. I've change the temp switch that just pushes in with a push clip to hold it in place and I've had the fan out to look at the plug on it but was not really a le to make head nor tail of it or where the plugs are for it!

just a thought on the bottom engine mount bush, ive looked at a few on ebay & they say that they fit the 306 aswell, is it possible to get a poly bush for a 306 & fit it to the 406? it would make changing them a lot easier if you havnt got to remove the drive shaft, lee
