Engine oil grade Hdi90
Before I order 20l motor oil off fleabay, which grade for my 2.0?
Common wisdom appears to be 10W40 semi synth.
Has anyone had any negative experience with bulk oil off fleabay??

Book says: 5w40 Synth. cold climate,
10w40 semi-synth, Hot climate,

Im using Tescos oil, seems to be good value for its money,

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
Opie oils is ok, but id sooner buy oil off the shelf,
idont look at the Makes, ilook at the specs on rear of the label,
after working for a well known chemical company, (agency work) ilearnt that labels can differ in make but the contents are identical, same oil,
so iwouidnt look away from supermarket oil as after all tescos etc dont make it its bought from there Hand picked choice of oil suppliers,
For bulk buy on oil, Id recomend Costcos,
http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html
see link above: Quote, It doesn't matter what sort of fancy marketing goes into an engine oil, or how many naked babes smear it all over their bodies, or how bright and colourful the packaging is, it's what's written on the packaging that counts. Specifications and approvals are everything. There are two established testing bodies. The API (American Petroleum Institute), and the European counterpart, the ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d'Automobiles - replaced CCMC in 1996). You've probably never heard of either of them, but their stamp of approval will be seen on the side of every reputable can of engine oil.

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
the rear of the labels don't tell you much the real info is in the numbers i.e the viscosity index(different to the grade) and saps and other stuff too
Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
I've had many arguments about oil grades over the years, but the fact is that I have used 10w40 semi synthetic API A3/B3 oil in every HDi engine I've ever serviced, my own vehicles included.
I looked after a fleet of more than 30 Peugeot Expert vans from new up to sometimes 100,000 miles with oil changes at 12,000 miles and never had a single issue with any of them.
My own van is one of the fleet I used to maintain.
Although the specs listed on the oil containers are minimum specs, 10w40 semi synthetic, API A3/B3 spec is perfectly fine for the 406 HDi engines.
Of course the engines with DPF need a different spec oil.

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
My man in the know too goes solely by ACEA categories. He recommended me ACEA A3/B4 5w-40 for my Saxo race car. It's a low budget car and engine has to last as long as possible.
I got some clearance Fuchs 5w-40 (is for my race Saxo) mighty cheap from Opie oils, as was being rebranded - got a seasons worth of oil for under £50.

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
well it should be a3-b4 as that has the ability to handle the extra soot produced by di engines
hears sum thing to have a play and look at

Well, as i said I've had many arguments over the years on this subject.
On some of the cars you will see a sticker under the bonnet that shows the oil grade and it clearly states A3/B3, but there's no harm in using a slightly higher spec.
I go off my personal experience and the recommended oil listed in the catalogues.
Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
Can I assume that numbers higher than A3-B3, Eg. A4-B4 have a higher grade of soot retention etc.
and lower numbers(A2-B2) less so?
The Ebay stuff (Item number: 0724719089) only states:
Type: Car Care MPN: TMX620
Manufacturer: Tetrosyl Carplan
Intended Use: Modification/ Enhancement
Subtype: 10W40 OIL10W/40
EAN: 5010373055465
I might get some anyway, I can always chuck it in the old Transit camper.

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
a*-b* also is a reference for the oils ability to deal with sludge and other thing so to put an a2-b2 in is asking for trouble
oil will oxidize and thicken over time once the tub has been open so unless you have three or four to use it in you could end up wasting money

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
The Autocare stuff has finally arrived and all it gives on the container is:
CC TMX620
API SL/CF
What does that mean?

Re: Engine oil grade Hdi90
Thanks Max,
After a lot of trawling I'm not much the wiser:
The petrol bit is:
SL Meets 2001-2004 on requirements of Automotive manufacturers
So fine for my 03 if were a petrol!
The Diesel bit is less clear:
CF OBSOLETE Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with
over 0.5% weight sulfur. Can be used in place of CD oils.
Where CD is described as:
CD Severe duty diesel, including turbo, Caterpillar Series 3, MIL-L-2104C
Does this equate CF to:
CF-4 Severe Duty four stroke diesel engine service for lower emission diesel engines (from 1988)
ie. Does the old CF = Modern CF-4? or CF-3?
or is it Transit oil

no the old cf dose not equate to cf-4 as the cf-4 is a newer specpiglet wrote:Thanks Max,
