Hi all.

Just an update from my P0230 and METAL FILINGS IN FUEL FILTER posts.

I have been waiting for a new(well 2nd hand) low pressure pump and filter housing which turned up on Saturday.

Fitted the other pump and still she won't start. Fitted the new filter head and bowl, noticed more filings in the bowl
The car still won't start and I have noticed that the lid of the fuel filter housing is not expanding?? I put the old one back on and that don't expand also where it used to. Does anyone know if that is an indication of another problem which is preventing the car from starting??

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

have you got 12v to the pump?

where are you as i can pop round and have a look for you

Our fitters at work are wondering if these metal filings might be in the diesel from the fuel station, as it's so common.

I am in Liverpool. Do you mean getting 12v to the low pressure pump? If so yes, pump is pumping away.
A friend has suggested trying a squirt of easy start as if the injectors are over fuelling then it won't start??

I wouldn't put easystart in a hdi engine. What ever the problem is, easy start is not the answer.

Ive never use easy start,
idont like the way engines seem knock on it,

iuse Brake cleaner or wd40, its most probs no good for the engine either

Note taken guys, no easy start going in. I will just keep plodding away until it breaks my will...or my bank balance

I reckon easy start etc. is a good diagnostic tool but not something you should use on a regular basis as it'll probably damage stuff. In this case all it'll tell you is that you have a fuel issue and I reckon you've already figured that out.

I'm not sure about the fuel filter bulging, the cut off pressure seems to be 1.6 bar so maybe a little. Mine's a different housing, plus I'm on my tod so I can't really watch it and turn the key at the same time...

I've had another Google, it seems like this fault can point to any fuel pressure issue and the fuel pressure regulator is choice - did you get anywhere with this? I'm not suggesting you rush out and buy a new one (after selling a kidney ) 'cos we're a long way from being able to say this is definitely the problem.

Swarf - I came across a few references to this, as Busman says it might come from gas station pumps but again I'm not sure. What we really need is someone to take a lift pump apart and tell us what the actually moving parts of the pump are made from (not you Womble, as far as I can see you now have 3 good pumps on your hands). I really need to go out and do something useful with my day but later on I'll have another Google and see if I can find out if swarf/iron filings are turning up in any other cars' fuel systems. Hmm, I wonder what the French is for swarf

Hi Steve.

I got one of a 406 hdi that was in a local breakers yard but it was slightly different in that mine goes to a point and this one didn't? Thought I would give it a go anyway but it didn't work.

Pity I just couldn't borrow one to rule it out or confirm before I take the plunge? I might open a library where you can hire car parts to try before you buy, I could always start with low pressure fuel pumps

Sometimes I reckon that would be a very good idea
