Tried to start Doris this morning. She was idling for about 5s then there was a rattle and a clunk
I pulled off the top timing belt covers and the belt was all loose but not snapped. I suspect the tensioner has failed.

What should I do now? It's a 2003 GLX V6 auto with 195k on the clock.
I paid £400 for it 2 weeks ago. Is it worth sourcing a new engine or should I get the good bits off of it and scrap it?

i have no idea on this particular engine but as it was only ticking over you might be lucky, unless you tried re-starting it many times before you realised it was belt related.
the coupe boys will probably know more than anyone but theres a few on here had the v6, is Mjb still kicking round he used to know his stuff on the v6

Bit of a gamble realy, but with it failing on tickover, you might escape bent valves,

if all else fails, Breaking it might return you near enough 400 quid, trouble is the time it takes to get rid of parts.
then theres the time and Mess involved,

Yeah 16" Nimrods, my mate with a Saxo is after them though otherwise they would go on here first.

Looking at Passat Syncros now.

The guy who owned it previously said it had it's timing belt changed. True enough, but they didn't change the tensioner

Ive repaired a few cam belt failed cars,

last one was the new shape renault Meg, the cambelt and tensioner on that had only done 15k,
the owner had the receipt too to back that up,

the Tensioner on that smashed to peices the pulley wheel was in 2 peices,, so idont think its the cambelts that lets go like they used to its the tensioners that fail,
one of the reasons ialway buy Gates stuff, but others say there all as good as each other,

I would have fixed it but it has been sat in my Uncles garage and I can't leave it there with no way of moving it.

I only paid £400 for it. I got £150 for the shell and a mate is giving me £150 for the alloys.
If I get another £100 for the lock set, ecu +bsi with clocks etc I've broken even!

Not bad for a few weeks of lunatic driving with an awesome engine

ive had aplay in tweeked up bora there good fun, and pretty much bullet proof

The idea of a weekend car is to have a big petrol engine.
I have the Mondeo to be sensible.
