406 stepper motor

I have had problems with cut out at low revs and need to change the stepper motor (have done the temporary fix of removing the old one and cleaning it).
The trouble is that the ones I have bought so far (x2) appear to be correct but the visible length of the piston shaft under the head on the new stepper is 9mm, the existing one on the car is 15mm.
The car is a 1996 Peugeot 406 1.8 saloon and the numbers on the old stepper motor are :
BI3/00 and A1796, were there different steppers fitted to the early 406s?

I'm not familiar with the 1.8 engines; ServiceBox lists three:
1) 16v 112bhp
2) 8v 103bhp
3) 8v 92bhp
Do you know which yours is? Alternatively if you PM me your VIN I can find out

So yours is the 16v 112bhp engine, and ServiceBox appears to only list one part number for the idle regulator:

Looks like the one you have there is Magneti Marelli (my c*ck is so smelly)
7 quid? Not really worth sodding about in the breakers...

Thanks Jon for looking it up, its what I thought the engine was.
The trouble is that the one in the link looks exactly like the two I bought in terms of the plunger length !!
After getting the 2nd one I wondered if mine just had the piston jammed in the 'out' position, so fitted one of the new ones and all that happened was I had a tick over of 3000 rpm.
So has anyone got an old one they could measure?
