Hi Paul and welcome
The noise could be anything really, you're best off having a good listen around the engine bay in a quiet location. Even fitting the wrong size aux belt can cause a noise very similar to this. Is it only in 3rd gear that it happens? And at a certain rpm or above a certain rpm?
One thing to know is that "Anti-pollution fault" could mean literally anything. My bet would be on the DPF and additive system, but there's no way to tell for sure without using diagnostics. Another suspect on the 2.2 HDi is a vacuum system leak causing turbo overboost.
Whereabouts are you based? There are lots of people all over the country with PP2000 (the dealer diagnostic kit, or clones thereof) who could help you out and save you a huge amount of time and cost trying to work out what's wrong.

hears a diy boost leak tester

just instead of an air compressor fitting use a bike pump and a schrader valve

Hi Paul & welcome to the forum.
If you're pushing it bit, a faint, recurring hiss is completely normal - both of my 2.2's do/did this, most noticeably climbing hills, (which I put down to it working harder at lower road speed = less wind/road noise to mask it). Reckon it's just the control system regulating the boost.
If it seems to much for this explanation, then look for a boost leak. If significant, these tend to cause a smokey exhaust - ecu measures masses of air flow, (which isn't all going into the engine) and adds too much fuel......
As the others have said, 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT' is pugspeak for any engine ecu error. Worth checking for leaks, beyond that get the faults read.
Post your location - someone nearby could maybe help.
