Well have done a year now since i have changed my DMF + clutch kit to a Solid convertion since the original one was slipping hard.

HAve have done +/- 50000 KM and this new clutch is already slipping .

My 406 is a 110bhp from 2000 and now marks 172000 KM on the dash, i have done a remap for about 6 or 7 months ago, and it sat on 134bhp, i dont rev it very hard all the time only at needed spots and this is where it started to slip, it only happens at 4th and more on the 5th gear.

The kit itself was a valeo convertion that i found on ebay.

Your new power output is probably too much for the standard clutch.

I didnt knew that a difference in 20 hp could be too much for standard clutch

20bhp but more importantly more torque - this is what kills clutches.

You are right though you would think that a small increase in power would be ok but these days everything is made down to a price so if it doesn't need to withstand 130bhp then it won't be made to either

To put the situation on its head, would you pay an extra 50-100% for a car with 110hp, but with every part specified to be able to handle more than twice that? Wouldn't you be wondering "why am I paying for something I'll never use?" or "why don't they just sell it with 260hp, then?"?

The 406 can handle 210hp perfectly well, otherwise owning a 3.0 V6 would be a nightmare. But over-specifying parts to such a degree as to handle a 260hp diesel (with 5-600nm torque) is expensive, and not a very sound business idea when 99,999% of your buyers will never even remotely approach the operating limits of the car at 110hp, let alone at 260hp.

Plenty of 406s reach 300.000km and even 400.000km, I've seen examples for sale with over 500.000 on both petrol and diesel engines. They hardly ever rust, parts are generally inexpensive and they're simple enough that any mechanic can fix them. Personally, I'd consider that as overbuilt as PSA could possibly justify without bankrupting themselves. Then, if you want to go beyond the performance envelope set down by PSA, you need to buy uprated aftermarket parts. I would say that's rather reasonable :-)

Not wanting to tempt fate,but....
I had my 110 re mapped when i got my car in 2006 at 56k miles.The clutch started slipping straight away when accelarating hard in 3rd or 4th gear,or sometimes in 5th gear when using the cruise control to get back up to a set speed.I just used to back off and floor it again & all was well.
Here we are nearly 10 yearson from when the car was new.177k miles,plenty of caravan towing & still on the original clutch & dmf.

.......or fit a 2.2 HDi flywheel & clutch?
built for 235 lb/ft as std, they're OK at 300 lb/ft or more.

The standard clutch should be fine until you start pushing 150bhp.

My HDi90 was running 128bhp before I got rid and the clutch was fine!

Also is it a decent brand of clutch? Or a budget brand?
