Valve Tappets & followers 1.9td
1.9 td Executive 1996
I need to keep this old car running for another 18 months or thereabouts.
It needs a bit of work but I can do it a piece at a time, as the MOT is not due until Nov.
I have one job I want to tackle sooner rather than later.
It has always been a noisy engine but it has developed quite a mechnical slap on start up. The noise seems to be from the top of the engine at the timing belt end. I have assumed the general noise and the new slap to be the valve tappets and followers. There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what is actually fitted to these engines, including the local main dealer. It is not the hydraulic tappets, but solid tappets with shims.
The tappets I can get from the main dealer or motor factors but no-one seems to stock the shims.
If anyone knows where I can get these at relatively short notice in the Glasgow area or on-line, please let me know.
I have sourced a full set of tappets and shims from a breaker but would prefer fitting new parts.
Also, if you know any pointers or things to watch out for on this job, I would appreciate the advice.
Regards,
Colin.

If you have never done a job like this before then I would leave well alone.
The timing belt has to be removed plus the camshaft.
You have to measure the valve clearance on each valve then find a shim that fits to make the correct gap.....pain of a job!

Re: Valve Tappets & followers 1.9td
the shims will have to be made and there's no need to get new tappets just need re-shiming
they tend to tap all the time when the shims need doing but then it's an xud so its hard to tell
the way to work out how big your shim needs to be is the remove the current ones and measure the gap between the heel of the cam lobe (the big bit oppersit the small pointey bit) and take the clerance from that, i think that's how to any way
that should reley be the last option

madmadmax; I understand what you are saying about the tappets, but I hope to get this job done over a weekend. So, I wasn't wanting to open it up and then find I needed a part.
I have reset valve clearances on old Ford engines, but they had a screw adjustment on the rockers.
jasoer5; I have redone timing belts on these engines before, so I know the routines for lining up the engine. The only thing I haven't done is remove the camshaft. I have read Haynes and it seems straight forward (famous last words). There are a lot of pieces to come off and go back on again, so I think it is long job.
The noise is getting serious, so I would rather fix this first before laying out money on a new exhaust, tyres etc. And if it can't be fixed then I know what to do.
Regards,
Colin.

Re: Valve Tappets & followers 1.9td
i as a mechanic could get this done in a week end maybe if i did an 8h day but i would struggle with the shims as they need to be precise and square not just a piece of metal
the top end has to be striped then you have to go and masher the tappets one by one so you have to take the cam out then remove all the shims then put it back and torque it all down and then masher the clearances and that's what takes the time thats why its a £400+ job and no body will want to do it and why it should be the last thing you look at
check your belts and other things first

Colin, I'm currently doing this job on mine. I need to source:
3.300mm, 0907 14
3.150mm, 0907 10
3.275mm, 0907 13
...I will have a number of shims left over. What do you need? Maybe we can work out a trade? I'm along in Clydebank and would also like this completed asap.

Re: Valve Tappets & followers 1.9td
I spoke to Arnold Clark Peugeot this morning in Clydebank. Apparently they can supply new shims at £2.50 each by tomorrow morning. I've placed an order, might be useful information for you Colin?

Re: Valve Tappets & followers 1.9td
ally406: thanks for the emails and information. We will have to meet sometime.
Well, I was able to spread the work over two week ends (one Sunday afternoon and then two short days the following week), because I was working away and the company paid for a hired car.
Every thing came off easily enough, though fiddly. Camshaft shells in reasonable condition, shims perfect, gaps ok. I had a bit of a problem measuring the gaps as the cam has got to be in the correct position. Initially everything was 0.1 mm out. Anyway, what ever is making the slapping noise, it doesn't look like the tappets.
Put everything back together, tightened all the seals and she started first time. All I found has the bottom engine mount is pershed and needs to be replaced.
This job wasn't as difficult as I feared. I was working in the open, between snow flurries, and it took me about a day and a half real time. Possibly make sure you know how to set the engine timing before you start. I locked the position of the camshaft and injector pump before I removed anything. Access to the timing belt tensioner is a pig.
Thanks for all the help.
Regards,
Colin.

I wouldn't have done tappets if I wasn't absolutely certain that was my problem.
You haven't got a leak from an injector seal by any chance? That will be a loud noise.
A leak from the exhaust manifold could cause a slapping noise.
