Engine management Light

The EML came on in January on my '99 Hdi 90 facelift. It had been running perfectly albeit with a battery which was slowly giving up the ghost. One very cold morning I cranked the engine over, the speed dropped off fairly quickly without the engine firing and the starter motor stopped followed by a clicking of the solenoid. At that instance the EML came on and hasn't cleared since. This is despite disconnecting the battery - to replace it with a new one - and overnight to give the system a chance to clear its throat (and spurious codes). Has anyone else experienced the same? The car runs as sweetly as before and has passed an MOT merely with an advisory so given the car's worth marginally more than scrap value there's no point in spending on it but I would love to know what might be wrong. Any ideas? Please don't suggest connecting to a clone PP2000 - I bought one from China which doesn't work and I suspect mine may be too old in any case.

the only way to tell is to read the code, as for being too old for pp2000 then you are wrong i have an x reg and can connect fine to that and have plugged it in to a p reg too

+1 mine works on my bro's S reg 1.9. There's a fair chance your diag port fuse has blown or been borrowed
