Just bought 1997 406 ST D8 4D and strange noises

Hi, as topic says we just bought a 1997 406 ST D8 4D.
We test drove it with the owner and no problems.
My girlfriend drove back about 4km and again, no problems.
When we first looked at it and had the hood up there was a bit of a top engine rattle.
We thought it was something with the aircon as when the owner turne dthe aircon off the rattle stopped.
We were happy, agreed on a price as it has been reguarly serviced etc and picked it up.
The car has 188,000km on it and we payed $3300 Australian dollars for it, which Google says is 2200 pounds.
Few blocks away after picking the car up going up a bit of a hill we feel a shudder coming from the front possibly the engine.
It is the kind of shudder you would get through the car if you had a really low idol or the aircon was on at idol and produced a shudder.
It seems to go away, it comes and goes and we have only driven in it for about half an hour so have not worked out what could be causing it.
Back tyres are a bit worn and I think if they have been rotated recently maybe a weight or something could be causing it but for the noise to come and go again is a bit puzzling.
Reading on here I also thought maybe an engine mount.
At one stage we stopped to see friends and when we got back in the car and started it the shudder was there but went away up the road a bit.
I have read that the early 405's could make this vibrating sound when cold but the engine temp should have been fine after the driving it has had and why did we not notice the first time we test drove it.
Also I noticed when we got home that the engine sounded like a jet winding down, could this be a broken fan possibly?
Any suggestions are welcome, we will take this to a Peugeot dealer next Monday when we have a day off and hopefully they can isolate it.
So glad I found this forum.
I am Rob and live with my children and girlfriend in tasmania Australia, I am nearly blind but love cars.
This is my third Peugeot after owning a 1970 504 and a 1979 504.
Thanks
