Hi Folks
I have a 2000 model 406 and it has developed a rattle in the exhaust. At first I thought it was the cat, that was changed and STILL the rattle on acceleration and occasional idle. Then took the car to the muffler shop and all was well with that. NOW i am told its a rattle inside the exhaust man. Has anybody else experienced this? How can it be rectified, and is this a job that requires considerable labour?

My guess: Either the innards of your 1st silencer (middle of the car) or a heat shield has come loose.
Dirty DIY fix for silencer:
Hit the thing with a hammer and make some major dents. This will press the loose stuff together and rattle will stop, Before you ask, no, it didnt make any notable power difference on my old 2.0.
EDIT: I might have missread. Are you saying the sound is in your manifold? Based on how the Manifold looks and works that seems highly unlikely, unless it has started to disintegrate or parts of your engine is stuck in there. Could be a snapped spring/bolt or the heat shield.

No sorry, i should have been clearer.
has anyone had a situation with a 406 2.0 petrol engine where the baffles inside the exhaust manifold have come loose and rattle at idle and on acceleration? i've had my cat replaced and the mufflers are in fine condition. I even took the car to the exhaust shop to clarify the mufflers were fine.
So the question is, is this an uncommon problem, and is the cost to rectify material? I was wondering also, that if there is a loose plate inside my manifold this might be affecting performance in some way.
Just wanted to raise this to see if others had suffered the same?
cheers

I'm 99% sure there is nothing inside the manifold on the 406. I do think either the heat shield on top or the bolts/exhaust fittings could be involved.

Not the manifold on mine but the baffles came loose in the centre box, rattled all the time and was most noticeable with the windows down and under acceleration.
