i replaced my air flow meter with a cheap one from ebay as when i ran diagnostics on the car it showed a fault now the fault is gone but a new fault is there it is Intermittent fault. EGR air circuit fault. Air flow higher than recommended. the car is a 406 saloon 2.0 hdi 110 year 2000 done around 163000 miles can i clean the egr, blank the egr or should i replace it?

Air flow higher than recommended? Isn't it the MAF measuring that?

If you disable the EGR (which I highly recommend) then the system measures higher than expected air flow when it thinks the EGR is open because extra air is being drawn in (through the MAF) to compensate for what 'should' be coming from the exhaust. So if your EGR is stuck closed then (1) that's no bad thing (although check that it's properly closed and not part open), and (2) this explains the intermittent fault.

It seems the pro's to cleaning and keeping the EGR is that the engine warms up quicker and you don't need to remap the car.
The con's are having dirty exhaust smoke and having to clean it again someday.
Mine has been removed and I am very happy - no smoke at all, ever - and car warms up just fine, maybe a little longer but it is winter....
It also gives more space in the engine bay for fixing other things, like swirl diaphragm etc.
