Can a blown turbo cause a seized engine??

Post by JonnyH »

Hi I have a 406 1.9td that has a blown turbo and apparently a seized engine. The owner said the turbo blew whilst driving. The pulled over and tried to stop the engine which wouldnt stop and continued running for 10 mins when it stopped and apparently seized. Can anyone shed some light on this?

It's possible. The engine keeping on running means that oil was leaking into it - likely from the turbo. If it burned off all the engine oil, I can well imagine it seizing

Land Rover and BMW diesels are good at this (same engine I think), the seals on the turbo go and the engine runs on the sump oil until there is none left. It'll also run with no rev limit, with the engine revving until it throws a rod or something. Standard practice is to stand on the brakes, stick it in gear and drop the clutch in the hope the engine stalls out. If it's a manual that is...

exactly right, the oil is fed into the intercooler and then in turn taken into the engine via the inley and used as fuel so even if you turn key off wont make any difference still wont stop reving if you catch it quick enough and your brave enough you can stall it by either using gears or block the air intake to starve it of air.
If not stand well clear as it will blow..............when I was working in a bus garage a few years ago someone put a new turbo on a optare bus he forgot to clean out the intercooler as a lot of the oil had accumulated in there he started it up ran it and it was ok until it warmed up then started using the oil as fuel revving higher and higher automatic bus.....not able to stall it he called me over but it was revving to hard and couldn't get it to stall by starving it of air emptied the guys out the work shop it lasted about 5 minutes loads of smoke and eventually a big bang conrod through the block....lesson learned me thinks!!
