Can anyone help? I was driving on dual carriageway this afternoon on the limit, just cruising and think I heard a pop and then the turbo whining loudly but with hardly any power, also as I open throttle get lots of smoke from exhaust.
Also maybe a clue to the pop the thin vacuum pipe was off I think the EGR replacing made no difference.
Any help appreciated as it sounds pretty expensive to me!
The car is a D8.5 Hdi 2.0 exec estate 1999

Re: Turbo fault I think?
the pop will have been a boost pipe exploding or popping off so nice and cheap to fix just check all pipes and joints
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atretf9u-Mc you can use a bike pump instead of the compressor, you can get bolt in tire valves
i would remove the pipe from the egr valve and plug it

Brilliant thanks for that. To be honest the symptom looked more expensive than the repair! thamks again.
Excuse the dumb question but why block the pipe to the EGR?
Keith.

i would block the egr pipe because i don't like the fact that it puts exhaust gases loaded with carbon which acts as an abrasive dust and that mixes with any oil in the intake and blokes up the intake manifold and robes you of mpg's and power.
it dose have some good thing about it but it's only there to reduce NOx
